MacLELLAN, Rev. Rupert Augustine

October 3, 1928 – Indian River, Prince Edward Island
August 4, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Rev. Rupert MacLellan of Calgary, AB, a cherished family member, pastor, mentor, colleague, and friend, passed away peacefully in his 90th year on August 4, 2018, the feast day of St. John Vianney.

Son of the late Bernard and Grace (MacDougall) MacLellan, Rupert is lovingly remembered by his brother Urban (Vera) MacLellan of Burlington, ON; sister-in-law Betty MacLellan of Stoney Creek, ON; brother-in-law Dan Brooks of Freedom, New Hampshire; and his seventeen nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by brothers, Emmett, Justin, Harold; sister Agatha Brooks; sister-in-law Kathleen MacLellan; niece Julie; nephew Chris; and grand-nephew Philip.

Following his graduation from St. Dunstan’s University (1950), Charlottetown and St. Augustine Seminary, Toronto, Rupert was ordained on April 3, 1954 and celebrated his first Mass at his beloved home parish of St. Mary’s in Indian River, Prince Edward Island. Knowing that he could always return to the peaceful rural setting where he grew up, Fr. Rupert willingly accepted the call to serve in the then fledgling province of Alberta. He served many parishes in the Calgary Diocese, including St. Joseph’s (Coalhurst), St. Peter’s (Milk River), St. Mary’s (Banff), St. Anne’s, Holy Name and Holy Spirit, Calgary. In his faithful dedication to helping others, Fr. Rupert’s ministries would also include becoming director of Religious Education for the diocese, teaching at Fr. Lacombe High School, chaplaincy with the Calgary Catholic School District, lecturing at St. Mary’s University and frequent assisting at many parishes. Upon completion of his active ministry, Fr. Rupert remained spiritually and pastorally present to all of us for which we are very grateful.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. Michael Catholic Community (800 – 85 Street SW, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Cathedral (219 – 18th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Reception to follow in the parish hall. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. 14. Words cannot express the Love and Respect we all have for Father Rupert. He would visit his beloved cousin Imelda in Boston many times, often on his way from PEI and Freedom,NH. He officiated his nieces, nephews and cousins weddings in Canada as well as New Hampshire, Maine and Boston including mine. He made it extra “special” He loved his Priestly Ministry, PEI, Calgary, his extended family, and his students. He was a “1” and only. Never ever will there ever be another Rupe. His smile radiated love. He loved baseball and was self described “the biggest Red Sox Fan in Calgary”. (Sorry to my Canadian cousin Jays fans). Our lives were enriched by his presence. God Bless Father Rupert

If you attended Father Lacombe in the 80’s or early part of the 90’s there is a good chance his grace and love blessed you. He married my wife and I 20 years ago and baptized many of our children. He blessed the only two homes we’ve ever owned. He might be gone, but he will never be forgotten in our family.

RIP Rupe, we love you, the lord has brought another disciple home.

Father Rupert (Fr. “Rupe”) was an amazing man and an incredible priest who went well beyond his expectations.
Fr. Rupe married my wife Susanne and I 25 years ago and performed my father’s unique funeral in 1996.
Fr. Rupe was a bit of a “rebel” in the best ways imaginable. Always accepting and inspirational, he was the “coolest priest a person could have the pleasure to hang out with.
I remember several long cross country runs with him at the helm, and time on the tennis court…I will never forget his words as I prepared to serve the ball “I know that I’m a priest but please show me NO mercy!”
Father Rupert, a beautiful servant of God and all whom he met.
We will never know another like him…it is time that God can put him to work in a more wonderful place.
Fr. Rupe, I hope that you are enjoying the fruits of your hard work…you came close to leaving this world several times before. This time you’ve left us, every one of us better off than before we met you! Peace, love and respect.

  27. Father Rupert was a God send to us when he became our Parish Priest in Milk River. He mobilized the youth in our parish in a way that made us strong Catholics. When we were to go to church for Catechism on Mondays, he realized he was losing a few on the walk from the school to the church – no problem – catechism was now taught after class at the school. At mass, everyone was to sing to the Lord and he walked up and down the aisle to make sure everyone was singing. There were a few dissenters with the change – no problem, he held one mass for the more mature group – mass complete with folk music for the younger group. He organized a CYO conference in Milk River with youth from all over Alberta with a top speaker from San Francisco. He was a frequent visitor to our farm where he was taught to participate in harvest and how to drive a three ton truck. My Dad bought a small boat and Father gave us a true white knuckle experience riding with him as the captain on Chin Lake. The memories and his faith will be with my family and that community forever. Rest in Peace Father.

Kind and gentle with a zest for life is the way I would describe Father Rupe. I had the privilege of being married by him in 1988 and the honor of having him baptize our 4 children. We first met at Father Lacombe and kept in contact for many years afterwards but sadly lost touch. I have thought of him fondly over the years and was saddened to hear he had passed. You will be missed Father Rupe….the world was a better place with you in it.

  34. Father Rupe: Chaplain, Catechist, Counsellor, Confessor, Comforter…Extraordinaire! We met as colleagues at Father Lacombe High School and when ‘255-3453’ appeared on my call display, I knew I was in for a lively debate and stimulating conversation. We would throw around ideas for a homily, a conference presentation, or a university class he was about to give, and I was honoured to be part of his process. Although, he might also have been calling to report on a thrilling ski trip to the mountains. His sincere and thorough enjoyment of education and recreation was evident and an inspiration to others. “Blessed are the Pure in Heart” (Mt 5:8). That’s Rupe! To all those many who felt he was theirs…family, friends, and flock…our loss is the Kingdom’s gain.

We are saddened to read of Fr Rup’e passing. He was a great mentor, friend, confident and a great example of what a priest in God’s service should be. I was one of Fr Rupe’s first alter boys in Calgary, at St Anne’s parish where he began his “western” tour of duty. He became endeared to our family and over the years has married, baptised, confirmed and buried most of my family. He was always there when ever we needed him. We shared many a meal and festive occasions with him and always relished his being there with us to celebrate. We offer condolences to Fr Rupe’s family and colleagues at this time of sorrow and pray that God will give all of you hope and peace in the following days.

  37. I met Fr. Mac at Father Lacombe High School in the 80’s. He was not your typical High School Priest. He looked over all of us and occasionally he attended some of our house parties and ski trips. He made us feel at ease and allowed us to be crazy kids while still keeping on eye on us to make sure we didn’t do anything stupid. Our friendship continued well after graduation . He married my wife and I 29 years ago and baptized both of my kids a few years later. Fr. Mac was a kind and gentle man who I am proud to have know. Our sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

He even broke out his awesome dance moves in between matches at the Provincial Championship Tournament in 1990! Father Rupe touched the lives of so many with his love, kindness, and sense of humor.
