Where to start? I guess when they bought the house next door. Geoff and Heather, and Peter and Todd, are the most generous people I know. They give their hands, their hearts, and then they ask if there is anything else they can give? Geoff was always there for me. We would visit after work, over the fence (he and Peter built), in our garages, or just anywhere. Conversation and laughs came easy with Geoff. He was like the big brother I never had. I said it often, my mom and dad let me live alone in Calgary because I lived next door to Heather and Geoff! We had so many stories and laughs, but it was that huge giving heart that I will miss the most. Whenever I needed any help, or guidance, or a tool, he was always there. Perhaps he gave me a little too much credit for knowing enough or some, or for having a heaping helping of common sense. He taught me how to start my lawn mower, when it was being difficult, with a squirt of ether. He didn’t say that I shouldn’t start my mower that way for the next 18 months or by increasing the spray duration! So I seized the engine?! Isn’t that normal? I can still see that quiet smirk and raised eyebrow over those twinkly eyes. So mister-chievious! I had to try to beat him to mow the lawns! I may have let him beat me to the snow shovelling on occasion, however…!

I know Geoff came from a big family, but he was truly one in a billion in my eyes. I knew he wasn’t well, but I refused to accept it. He’s the guy with the endless energy, drive, and motivation. He was the Energizer Bunny, except for the pink fur. He would pick a project, plan it, start it, plow through it, and finish it. He was an executor and nothing was too big or daunting for him to tackle. The day after that huge snowstorm, when he brought home the grader! He managed to hide it behind a tree in the alley!! A classic Geoff. We all could drive out of the Close because of Geoff. That was just him. Always there for anyone, well, until he got that bike…! One of his three loves, along with Heather and Harley. He was still there for you, but you might have to call him first!

Geoff was one of the good guys, no, he was one of the very best. Heather and Geoff have been so good to me for so many years, they are family to me. It was one of the best days of my life, when they bought the house next door, and they were one of the biggest reasons I didn’t want to leave.

Even though my heart is aching, missing my friend, I would never choose for Geoff to be in pain so I could have a few more moments with him. He was a wonderful man, kind and generous to the core. This world was much better with Geoff in it, and I will miss him terribly.

Heather, Peter, and Todd, I am so very sorry for your loss. Please accept my heartfelt condolences at this very sad and difficult time. The only thought I can leave you with is that I hope you will find comfort knowing Geoff will never truly be gone, because he is alive and well in you, and all of us. His spirit, his kindness, and his generosity not only benefitted us, it helped shape who we are today. I would like to think that all of Geoff’s great qualities rubbed off a bit on me. I can only hope to be a mere fraction of a Geoff, but I’ll take some of that, all day long!!

As amazing as he was it’s hard for me to focus on anything right now but the pain, the sadness, and the loss. Geoff, you are loved, you are admired, and you are missed. I hope you’re at peace and that you’re riding that bike to your heart’s content! You deserve it!

Good bye my friend. I miss you
    Joanne

Dear Heather and Beloved MacLaurin Family,

Thinking of you all and wishing you a cascade of wonderful memories to ease the heartache of your loss.

News of cousin Geoff’s passing was very sad to receive. His teasing humor, ready laugh and warm spirit have stood the test of time and distance and he will forever hold a special place in my heart.

A particularly fun memory of one of our summer trips to PEI is of Geoff “allowing” my sister Beth and me (when we were small girls) to comb the furry seat covers in his muscle car. He took us for a ride down the road and hit the gas, making us squeal with delight. He made us feel pretty special that day.

My deepest sympathy and loving prayers to you all and may you be comforted by beautiful memories, and the support of family and friends.

    Sincerely,
Cousin Dawne Gilpatrick from Maine, daughter of Corrine’s sister, Harriet
