September 20, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Jean Rider-Macaulay of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at the age of 80 years.

Jean was an independent, self-sufficient member of the Bearspaw First Nation from Eden Valley, AB. She was schooled primarily in Longview, Black Diamond, and Okotoks, AB. Jean worked with her family on various Southern Alberta Ranches as a child. After finishing high school in Okotoks, she moved to Calgary to train as a nurse in the 1960’s where she met her future Husband, Allan. She worked for many years as a nurse, and raised her family in Calgary. Jean loved sports (Rodeo, Chuckwagon racing, and Hockey), she was also a skilled horseperson, and in her younger years, she participated in horse racing contests during the Banff Indian Days. Jean was also named Banff Indian Days Princess in 1956. Jean loved listening to country music and visiting with friends, relatives, and her grandchildren. She was always welcoming people into her home. Jean lived life to the fullest. In her final years, she exhibited a lot of resilience in fighting illnesses, never complaining and exhibiting tremendous strength right till the end.

Jean is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Natalie Shotclose; daughter and son-in-law, Sheri Macaulay and Darrin Wolfleg; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and grandchildren who considered her to be their second mom.

We would also like to recognize her extended families from the Stoney Tribe; Holloway, Dixon, LaBelle, Daniels, Lefthand, Stevens, Amos, and Salter. From the Blood Tribe; the Wadsworth and Goodstriker families; and from her fathers side, extended family in Montana.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin Allan Macaulay; Father, Raymond Shotclose; mother, Jesse Rider; youngest son, Douglas Macaulay; brother, Clifford Rider; sister-in-law, Gaye Rider; sister, Elizabeth Rider; brother-in-law, George Duncan; sister, Hazel Rider; and brother-in-law, Allan Yates.

The family would like to thank all the staff of the Bowcrest Care Facility for helping mom get through her final few years with grace and dignity that all of us can only wish to have in our final days.
