December 7, 1945 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
April 19, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sadness that the family of Al Lye announces his passing at age 70 on April 19, 2016 following a brief but intense battle with cancer.

Al was born and raised in Winnipeg. Upon joining the Navy (R) he was appointed SLT and served with HMCS Chippawa and HMCS Cornwallis Training Division where he made many of his life long friends. A highlight of which was sailing the HMCS Oriole to Alaska. After graduating with his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba, Al made his way to Calgary where he began a twenty-year career with Schlumberger, served as President of the CWLS, and finally starting his own consulting company which he operated for 25 years.

Al traveled extensively throughout his career going North of the Arctic Circle to the southern tip of Chile as well as many trips to India, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. He went on an African Safari with his wife Joyce and spent many weeks travelling with family to the west coast, Mexico and the Caribbean.

He is survived by Joyce, his beloved wife of 43 years; daughter, Alana (Kevin) Toffey of Victoria B.C.; son, James (Heather) Lye of Calgary; and sister, Janet (Rick) Kelly of St. Albert, AB. He was also beloved papa to Megan and Ashlynn Lye and Kayla and Jayden Toffey and step uncle to Laura Kelly. He was predeceased by his parents, Gertie and Alf Lye.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Rockyview General Hospital, Foothills Medical Centre, and Tom Baker Cancer Centre for their excellent care and compassion.

A celebration of Al’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’s Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) Friday 29th of April at 2:00 pm. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation Lung Cancer initiative (http://albertacancer.ca/donate/lung-cancer-screening).

In living memory of Al Lye, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 Bannister Road S.E. Telephone (403) 256-9575.

Condolences for the family of “LYE, Allan George”

Condolence from Gille Montsion on April 24th, 2016 6:18 PM

Sorry to hear of Al’s passing. He was an expert at his science and a great mentor for me and other Petrophysicists. So many times I brought curious logging issues to our Tipple Tuesday colleagues looking for opinions. Al would always manage to enlighten me. We have lost a wealth of knowledge. I am grateful to have been influenced by Al and I send my condolence to Joyce and family.

Condolence from Cal Oleksuk on April 25th, 2016 10:31 AM

My deepest sympathies to Joyce, his friends, and family. I went to U of M with the “Captain”, but will always remember him best for the person most dedicated to his passion, work, more than anyone I ever knew. His second passion was equally as deep, that of his loyalty to his friendships, of which he had many. It seemed an odd day when he missed a Tuesday or Thursday after work gathering down town. Everyone would comment, “What happened to AL, he must be working?”

He leaves a big hole to filled in both his profession and his circle of friends.

We will all miss him.

Cal

Al is an old friend who was an expert at what he did and who I learned a lot from over the years.
I always went to Al for advice. In business and personally.
But mostly he was just a good friend.

My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Al.
