May 28, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Stanisław passed away after a sudden illness on Tuesday May 28, 2019. He is survived in Canada by his wife Krystyna; daughter Magdalena her husband Krzysztof and their daughter Maia; in Poland by his daughter Małgorzata, husband Krzysztof, three grandchildren Pawel, Ewa, and Jerzy; four great-grandchildren Zygmunt, Edmund, Stefan, and Kazimierz; and extended family in France.

Born in Łódź (Poland), Stanisław obtained his doctorate in the field of strength of materials at the Warsaw University of Technology; was a visiting professor at the Institute of Mechanics, Structural Analysis and Dynamics of Aerospace Structures at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences; and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Stanislaw had a successful career as professor at the Warsaw University of Technology where he was a three time recipient of the Jasinski Memorial Award granted by the Polish Academy of Sciences, and authored a book “Local Loads in Plates and Shells” published in Polish, Russian, and English.

In 1981, Stanisław and his family moved to Calgary, AB, Canada where he joined the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Calgary. Over the next twenty years, in addition to academic teaching, producing numerous publications, patenting a number of inventions and supervising master, doctoral and postdoctoral fellows, Stanisław continually pursued his passion for oil painting in his free time. As an outdoor enthusiast Stanisław spent much time admiring the beauty of his surroundings, exploring the prairies, hiking the Rocky Mountains, vacationing, painting and gardening in the Columbia Valley, and sailing along British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast.

Stanisław’s loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

We are saddened to hear that our friend and colleague Stanisław Łukasiewicz has passed away. He brought to our Engineering department at the University of Calgary, apart from his many talents and his research output, an air of aristocracy and refinement that originated at a different place and a different time. In this way, through him and others of his generation, we established our continuity with the great academic tradition that still animates our activity. He exemplified the complete blending of interests in the natural sciences, the arts, and world history, while delighting in the joys of nature and the outdoors. Our offices were adjacent to each other and we often spoke about his beloved Shell Theory. At a recent reunion, he was proudly describing to us Krystyna’s latest books about Medieval Polish history.
Our hearts are with Krystyna, and with Kris and Magda Palka.

  12. Dear Krystyna and family: I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Lukasiewicz when I first started at the UofC Mechanical Engineering in 1988. After many years I came back to the UofC and had the pleasure of seeing him again as he was clearing out his Emeriti Office and showed me his paintings. He was such a kind, sweet soul and had a wonderful laugh as well. He will be missed. Patti Evans

What a brilliant, creative, courageous and lovely man. I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of Stanislaw. The mastery of that analytical mind, the creativity of his art, the courage to pursue new ideas, and the way he demonstrated his love with the warmest inflections when referencing “my Krystyna”; I will forever remember these attributes of a truly wonderful man. I am deeply grateful for his life and desperately sorry for all us who will surely miss him.

  16. Oh Magdalena, my heart breaks for your loss. Your dad was a true gentleman and a very kind soul. The times I spent with him and your mom Krystyna were always lovely. Such a beautiful and loving couple.

His true nature was obvious in his art pieces; calm, serene and genuine. I loved seeing a full wall of his pieces, all together telling his story. He was such an emotional man. I remember the first time he saw his pieces displayed at Pynelogs, in all its glory. He was so humble and incredibly grateful. He shed a tear. This openness to show his feelings was a lovely quality of your dad. And his thoughtfulness and gratitude was never missed as he often brought me a gift of appreciation.

I’ve attached an image of one of his pieces. I especially enjoyed his flowers, he had a way of capturing their gentle natures.

Please give your mom a hug. She will deeply miss him as they seemed so well matched and comfortable around each other. They had a great deal of respect and courtesy together. It was lovely to watch them interact.

Many hugs to you and the Lukasiewicz family.

    Dear Kristyna and Family
    What sad news!
    Please receive my deepest condolence.
Thank you that you informed me.

I am so preveledged to have met Stanislaw at the time when he lectured at University of Stuttgartart. I was one of his students.
He impressed me with his lecture on shell analysis, which he gave in German language; he was my best teacher in Stuttgart; and this he was indoors and outdoors.
He suggested to go ski-touring together in the German Alps at the time when I should prepare for my examinations.
His advise was: first we ski and then you write well your Examinations. I followed his advice and it turned out to be the right decission. What was even better we become friends.
When he was back in Poland and we were allowed to travel by car to Poland he invited me and my wife Ingrid to visit him in his home in Warschau. There we experienced the overvelmimg hospitality of Stanislaw and Krystina.
We saw there the the beautifully rebuilt center of Warschau.
Later he took us to his summer residence – when I remember correctly: a former horse stable remodeled by himself –

There I saw the first time in my life storchs in nature n and meadows full of frogs.
Next we travelled, , 2 couples in 2 cars, to the the South of Poland (Bezchiden). We collects mushroom, Stanislaw grilled them, and I was amaze how good these tasted . We slept in tents and I could listened the songs of the shepherds.
These were wonderfull adventures for us.

Later when Stanislaw left for Canada to choose his freedom.
Ingrid and I hat the pleasure to be invited to Calgary, where we hiked in the mountains not too far from Calgary,

And not too lang ago he suggested to make vacation again
once more together in Canada. But unfortunately, forces out of our controle, prevented our meeting.
The first attempt was prevented due to Stanislaw’s knee eperation . In the second attempt I had to postpone my trip to Canadana, due to my brain stroke.
Stanislav advised me not to postpone this too long. but unfortunately I could not follow his good advice and waited too l0ng.
And now I can only be with him thinking of the baustiful time we had with Stanislaw.
