LONGPRE, Kerry

July 15, 1947 – January 10, 2019

Kerry died peacefully in Rockyview Hospital, with family and friends by her side, at the age of 71. She was a wonderful connector, catalyst and communicator in all relationships and aspects of her life – professionally and personally. She was a very creative and wise person with a passion for making a difference in the lives of people and was selected by the Calgary Herald as one of 20 Compelling Calgarians – innovative big thinkers making a mark in the city. Over the years she amassed many achievements, awards and tributes – first in book publishing and ownership of Sandpiper Bookstore with her lifelong friend Trish Blaker and with Ian Hawkins, then as Manager of Communications at the Glenbow Museum, and most recently as Vice President of Communications at the Calgary Foundation, where she was instrumental in the Foundation’s growth strategy and significant expansion of assets and community profile. She was a bright star in the communications profession and initiated many unique projects, including the annual Calgary Vital Signs report and Spur magazine, which in 2014 won the Content Marketing Award for ‘best Design, New Publication.’ Her Soul of the City Neighbour Grants project won the gold award in the AVA Digital Awards, an international award recognizing excellence in digital communication.

Kerry was dedicated to local, national, and international community service. She was a founding director of the Immigrant Access Fund and of the WordFest Banff-Calgary International Writer’s Festival. She was a board member of The Canadian Women’s Foundation, Alberta Theatre Projects, Wings of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, the Institute of Canadian Citizenship, and Action Dignity and was elected to the Rotary Club for her community service. She also had multiple professional affiliations including President of the Canadian Booksellers’ Association, Founding Director of the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing at Simon Fraser University and Founding member of Leave a Legacy Calgary.

Kerry loved fine food and to travel. She enjoyed trips to Hawaii with her mother and summer holidays in Nelson with the Hoar families and great-nieces Olivia, Rosemary and Quinn; hiked the Camino Trail in Spain and watched whales in Newfoundland with her life-long friends Donna, Linda and Shannon; sailed the Mediterranean and the Nile with Octavio; and explored Mayan ruins and scuba-dived in Belize with Lynda and Tom. She spoke some Spanish and loved Mexico, where she travelled extensively with Michelle, Joanne, and other friends. She also loved visiting Columbia, Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba and Guatemala. She enjoyed her recent trip to Nova Scotia with her friend Bob.
Kerry had a passion for life and for people!! She grew up in Edmonton and Calgary and graduated from the University of Calgary with a degree in Political Science in 1968.

She is survived by her brother Jack Hoar, his wife Barb and their children Michelle (Dave) and John (Lindsay), her sister Doreen Banning and her children Jessica (Jack) and Christopher (Jen), and by many cousins, including Lynn Malin (Lloyd), Marjorie Anderson and Lynda Phillips (Tom) of Edmonton.

She was predeceased by her mother Helen Douglas Hoar, her father Howard Douglas, her husband Clifford Longpre, her niece, Nicole Hoar, and her partner Octavio Ventura. She had many, many friends and will be missed by all of us who love, admire and respect her and her extraordinary talents and gifts.

A Celebration of Life will be planned for a future date.

Donations in honour of Kerry’s life can be made to the Kerry Longpre Tribute Fund online at Calgary Foundation www.calgaryfoundation.org or by cheque payable to the Calgary Foundation with Fund name in the memo line and mailed to Suite 1180, 105 12 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB T2G 1A1.

My memories of Kerry are all of contributing to the vibrancy of the city – introducing fabulous authors and a love of reading through Sandpiper and Wordfest, to her promotion of Glenbow activities and exhibitions, to her groundbreaking work with the Calgary Foundation. I loved team-volunteering with her at the Rotary Barbecues at Fort Calgary which she turned into an hilarious event. She will be missed and our warmest sympathy goes out to her family, friends, and well, the whole community.

My husband and I are saddened to hear this news. Kerry was so kind, friendly and helpful when we started our foray into book publishing. We didn’t really know what we were doing, but she and the other Sandpiper staff helped smooth the way for a small-time local book. We learned much from her. A very sad loss for her loved ones as well as for Calgary.

  23. I had the privilege of working with Kerry on many community foundation initiatives during her time at Calgary Foundation. She was certainly a pleasure to work with – always the professional with so much knowledge and expertise to share – but she was also a fun-loving and kind colleague whom I counted amongst my friends.

  24. Kerry was one of my heroes. When she ran Sandpiper she shared the best kid-book lists a new mum could hope for and, later, when I would bump into her at various events (that bounce of white hair was always everywhere) that list morphed into adult-lit and travel tales. I will miss her generous spirt, her laugh, her style — her wisdom.

I found out today and feel gutted. I think of Kerry often and fondly. Kerry was a friend and mentor in my life. She was full of wisdom and kind words for me. Coming from a woman of such high caliber, I was always grateful for any attention she gave me. A part of me goes on with Kerry and her kindness, strength and poise live on in my memory. I’m so very sorry for your loss.

  27. Kerry was a fabulous person with a huge spirit that she shared and inspired others with. She was always wise and kind and generous. We had great conversations about travel, language and philanthropy, among other wide ranging topics of discussion during our many lunches. Kerry changed for the better the cultural and philanthropic landscape in Calgary. We are all better off because she lived the life she did. She died too soon with yet unexplored trails to walk. But she sure made a difference while she walked among us. I’ll miss Kerry -as so many of us will. My condolences to her family and all those that were close to her and loved her.

  30. My condolences to Kerry’s family and countless friends and colleagues whom she inspired every day. Kerry was gracious, wise and generous – with an enthusiasm for all that life had to offer, tempered with genuine concern for others. At 19 or 20, Kerry and I first met as we were travelling “standby” to visit mutual friends. I was immediately impressed by her calm demeanour and quiet suggestion that I read one of her novels to pass the time as we waited hours for a flight. From that young age, and for decades, Kerry went on to make a difference in the lives of countless people in our community and beyond. She will be missed.
