LONG, Judith (Judy) Anne

July 14, 1953 – Regina, Saskatchewan
November 24, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

On Saturday, November 24, 2018, Judith (Judy) Anne Long, loving sister, friend and mother passed away surrounded by her loved ones at the age of 65 years.

Judy was born on July 14, 1953 in Regina Saskatchewan to Ross and Lois Long (nee Johnson). She moved to Calgary, AB at the age of three years, where she spent the rest of her life. Judy enjoyed a career as a Community Resource Worker with the Developmental Resource Centre for the last thirty-four years. She loved working on the many different teams supporting a number of individuals in finding work and independence. She especially loved her time with the PACE team supporting young adults as they moved from school to the work world.

Judy raised two daughters Danielle Brierley (Daniel Boutette) and Nicole Brierley (Joel MacDonald) and taught them both to be strong independent women. Judy had an abundance of patience and kindness in her that often made her the default confidant, and negotiator between her two daughters and those around her. Judy was an avid Flames fan and would listen to every game, updating those not watching on the score. She loved to spend her time in the garden surrounded by her flowers and found great enjoyment sitting on the beach at Kingbaker Creek Resort on Mara Lake. Judy loved to sing and dance to most music, especially in the car on road trips.

Judy is survived by her daughters, Danielle Brierley (Daniel Boutette), and Nicole Brierley (Joel Macdonald); brothers, Doug (Nancy), James (Pat), and Dan (Stephanie); nephews and nieces, Rob (Danielle), Paul, Kate, Carson (Kendra), Brendan, and Peter (Ashlee); great-niece, Jules, and many cousins.

Judy was predeceased by her father Ross and mother Lois.

A Celebration of Judy’s Life will be held at a later date.

In living memory of Judy Long, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  1. Everett Schulz :

Unfortunately I never got the pleasure to meet Judith in person, but I have met the wonderful children she raised and I have seen the tempestuous shockwave that the news of her passing brings to the people she touched throughout her life. This effect demonstrates the sheer volume of love this incredible woman managed to share with her friends and family.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the sudden loss of Judy. Sandra and I remember Judy with great fondness and all of the fun times we had together with the Long family in Calgary and Beiseker. Our girls were much younger then, but like Lois, Judy was always warm and welcoming. May God bless you and your family and bring you comfort and peace during this sad time.

    Danielle, and Nicole,
Laura, and I, will always remember the many years we spent at Mara lake with you! We will miss your mom, dearly, and want to offer anything we can do to make this time, easier for you. The best memory of your mom’s sense of humour, came from when Chuck came over to do the siding on your garage – your mom didn’t know Rob Palmer knew Chuck, and Chuck didn’t know your mom knew Rob. There was a phone call that your mom instigated, and everyone had a great laugh! Your mom had the best sense of humour, of anyone I ever knew. I will miss that the most!!! Please let me know if there is anything I can do! Call me anytime!!!

To Danielle & Nicole and family,
Judy supported our daughter Natalie is the PACE program when it first started. She was always so proud of our daughters accomplishments and took on such a positive attitude towards inclusion. Natalie thinks the world of her. It is with such sadness to hear of her passing. I had the opportunity to chat with Judy several times over the years. She spoke so proudly of you two girls. You were her light and her life! You both are truly blessed to have had such a caring mother. My heart truly goes out to you as this must be very difficult for you. I would welcome the opportunity to chat with you both sometime in the future if you wish. If I can be of assistance to you or your family please ask. Our deepest condolences go out to you all at this time. We are less of a community without her.
