George Edward Little, beloved son, brother, husband for 66 years, father of five, grandfather to seven, great grandfather to three, friend and colleague passed away Monday, June 18, 2018 in Calgary, AB.

George was the eldest child born March 9, 1924 to the late Charles and Selina Little of Regina, Saskatchewan. He grew up in Regina and went off to study Engineering at Queen’s University for a year before volunteering with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion in World War II in 1942. He served overseas and was in Belgium at wars end. Returning to Canada in 1945, he attained entry to the University of Toronto receiving a B.A. in 1948, then his L.L.B. at the University of British Columbia in 1951 where he met his wife Dorothy. They married in 1952 in Victoria, BC. He joined the BC Bar in 1952 and joined the Alberta Bar in 1953 when he and Dorothy moved to Calgary, their home for the next 65 years.
In his professional life he was employed with several oil companies as legal counsel and retired in 1990 as Vice-President and Corporate Secretary of PanCanadian Petroleum. He was awarded the Canadian Petroleum Association’s Award of Merit and was Chairman of the CPA Saskatchewan Division. He served as Chairman of Syncrude Legal Committee and was an Executive Member of the Canadian Petroleum Law Foundation.
In his private life he served as a 30-year Executive Member of the Alberta Arthritis Society as well as President; a member of the Western Orthopedic and Arthritis Research Foundation; an elected member of the University of Calgary Senate and Chairman of the U of C McLaren Library Club; an elder, trustee and teen group leader at Riverview United Church; and a driver for the Honens Piano Competition. As an active member of The Glencoe Club and The Glencoe Golf & Country Club, he enjoyed many years of swimming, badminton, tennis and golf with family and buddies into his late-80s.
George was a loving and fearless man who accepted what life served up and revelled in the occasional adventure, including a camel ride in Dubai desert, back-country skiing in Jasper National Park Ramparts and white-water rafting on the Zimbabwe Zambezi River. He travelled to over twenty countries with Dorothy. His greatest enjoyment was time spent with family, particularly activities with his children and grandchildren swimming, hiking, skiing and playing games at Terra Vista, family cabin in the Windermere valley. He loved them all unconditionally and encouraged all to work hard, reach their potential, respect one another and enjoy the arts.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy; children Sharon (Dan) Dowdall of Toronto and Ken (Lisa) Little, Cathy Little, Alison Loewen, Nancy Helledie of Calgary; grandchildren Mike (Loudes) Dowdall of Toronto, Katie (Steve) Taylor of Ottawa, Charlie (Christine) Loewen of Edmonton, Alex (Kim) of Vancouver, Charlotte and Maja Helledie of Copenhagen and Jenny Little of Victoria; and great grandchildren Ender and Io Dowdall of Toronto and Edward Taylor of Ottawa; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

  3. David & Susan Little :

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We will not be able to attend the service but have a quick little memory.
When the children were small, Tracey 11, Jim 9, Jarrett 8, we stayed with Uncle George and Aunt Dorothy. We had a wonderful time. We were introduced to Calgary and its many sights. There are too many to mention, except the Stampede. We wanted to take the children and Uncle George got tickets for us. The children had an experience of a life time. Every night Uncle George would read to the children and tuck them in. We even met the family at Panorama for the weekend. Our children, now in their 40’s, still remember the wonderful time they had with Uncle George, Aunt Dorothy, and their cousins and speak of it often. Thank you so much for such wonderful memories.

    Love David, Susan and family.

  8. Sandy and Paul Basso :

Dear Dorothy, Sharon, Ken, Allison, Kathryn, Nancy, respective spouses and children:
It is with great sadness that Sandy and I learned of George’s passing.
We both admired him and enjoyed his company. Our favorite memories of him are a lively conversation over a good scotch at Sharon and Dan’s New Year Eve parties.
His obituary spoke volumes of his sense of duty to country, family, his profession and his charitable causes.
It is hard to imagine in this day that an 18 year old would volunteer and serve his country as a paratrooper. All going to show that his was a life well lived.
Again, on behalf of Sandy, Michael, Andrew and myself we offer our heartfelt sympathy and condolences.
