June 3, 1936 – Young, Saskatchewan
July 9, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Joan Marie Lipsett of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at the age of 83 years.

Joan was actively involved in the many communities where she lived, from her childhood and youth in Saskatchewan, to her long-time home of Calgary, with time living in Australia, Alaska, and Texas. She served on the University of Saskatchewan Women’s Athletic Board, was a member of the Samaritan Club of Calgary, eventually holding the office of President, and was active in the Bragg Creek Snowbirds Association. Joan was the Secretary of Lipsett Enterprises and owned a ladies clothing store for a time. She attended the University of Saskatchewan and received a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree. Joan was a major athletic award winner in university and active throughout her life – golf, tennis, curling and sailing were some of her favourites. Sailing a thirty foot sailboat in the Gulf Islands with the love of her life, George, was one of her cherished adventures. Joan’s creativity shone through in her quilting. She was an excellent seamstress, designing her own creations. Joan was a deeply loving and beloved Mom and Nana, and was proud of her children and grandchildren and their accomplishments.

Joan is survived by her loving husband George Bruce Lipsett, as well as her three daughter, Diane Lipsett (Richard Vinson) of Winston Salem, NC, Pat Cochrane of Calgary, AB, and Mary-Anne Lipsett (Brent Lindenschmidt) of Calgary, AB; three grandchildren, Elsbeth Joan Cochrane, James George Wudel, and Christopher Albert Wudel. She was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Eva Benson; her brother Mervin Benson, and her sister Barbara Hart.

To see her is to love her,
And love her but forever,
For Nature made her what she is,
And ne’er made anither!

Condolence Messages

  1. I am so amazed by Joan’s life story. Such a woman for her times.

The stories I’ve been told have made me laugh out loud and made me know how wonderful a person she was. And how much you all loved her.

Such a person will have left an indelible mark on this world that will have a lasting legacy. Not many of us will be able to say that about our own lives. You all have much to be proud of.

And I know how much you all will miss her. And my heart grieves for you.

My thoughts are with you at this time.

We were saddened when we read today’s announcement about Joan. So many wonderful memories going far back to the 50’s in the Weyburn “basement suite/trailer days”. Until health problems interfered life was a wonderful and rewarding adventure for Joan and George – bringing up a beautiful family, travelling the world and making strong friendships wherever they went. We will be out of town on the 19th but our thoughts and prayers will be with George, family and friends.

George, Diane,Pat and Mary-Anne, I will never forget witnessing Joan and Mom when they got together. As Gump said, they were like “peas and carrots”. Two small town Saskatchewan girls who looked at life through the same lens. I always looked forward to her enthusiasm and her eyes. They could melt your heart. My father-in-law knew her through high school sports in Saskatoon and would always ask how she was doing. He said she was the best girls basketball player in those years. Thinking of you guys, your Mom was amazing!

  10. Pat,
I was so sorry to hear about your Mom. It is so difficult to lose a parent but the memories and their presence in your life live on in wonderful ways- my personal experience anyway. But the grief is difficult and necessary.
I have fond memories of your mother- her warmth, joy, and laughter – Samaritan’s Club but also remember a road trip of some kind. 🙂
Sending you and your family sincere condolences.

  12. Aunt Joan was one of my favourite people. She had an infectious laugh, she could always see the positive side of any situation, and she taught me to love coffee rewarmed in the microwave. I will miss her very much.
