LEWIS, Gladys Yolanda

January 27, 1921 – Craigmyle, Alberta
October 5, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gladys Lewis on Thursday, October 5, 2018 at the age of 97 years.

Gladys was born in Craigmyle, AB on January 27, 1921, to Dan and Grace Marshall, and received her education at Georgetown School. As a young woman, Gladys and her sister Lillian moved to Calgary, AB in 1939, where they gained employment at McGavin’s Bakery. During World War II, they were given the opportunity to work for the Boeing Company, assembling aircraft on Sea Island, near Vancouver, BC. After a period of one year, Gladys unfortunately became ill and subsequently returned to the family farm. Following her convalescence, she moved back to Calgary, AB where she was employed by the Wales Hotel as an Elevator Operator and for many years, as a Sales Associate with the Hudson Bay Company, where she met her husband. Gladys married Arthur Lewis in 1948 and they were blessed with one son, Wayne Preston, to whom she was completely devoted. Following the death of her husband in 1971, Gladys worked at the Calgary Convention Centre for eleven years. She was a long time member of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL), sang in the adult choir at St. Pius X Church for forty years, and volunteered with St. Rita’s Group, catering for funeral lunches and other events in her church. In addition, she was honoured with the Life Membership Award for long and faithful service to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 284. Gladys particularly enjoyed playing bridge, dancing, and hosting family spaghetti dinners. An extraordinary lady, Gladys touched many lives with her kind heart and generous spirit. She was deeply loved and will always be remembered for the beauty she saw in everything and everybody. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and will be forever in our hearts. She lived a long life and went happily to be with her Lord.

Gladys is survived by her brother, Albert Marshall of Drumheller, AB; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Art; her son, Wayne; her parents; her three brothers, Ernest, Nicholas, and Fred; her dear sister, Lillian, and her special friend, Robert Bishop.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. Pius X Catholic Church (2424 – 24th Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church (2424 – 24th Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow at Church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
