LEWIS, Derek Gordon (Deek)

December 24, 1961 – Calgary, Alberta
December 29, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Derek beloved husband of Dawn Lewis (nee Biro) of Cochrane, passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the age of 57 years.

Derek was born in Calgary and moved to Cochrane in 1975 where he remained and raised his family. He married Dawn in 2005. He was a giver in so many ways and always put his family before himself. He was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by many friends and family. Derek had a 31 year career with Lafarge and attained his Professional Logistician (P. Log) designation in 2004. He coached and mentored so many throughout his career there. Derek worked hard at and excelled in many sports. He was a highly skilled hockey goalie and a home-run-hitting third baseman in fastball. He was respected by teammates and opponents alike throughout the Bow Valley and Calgary areas. He proudly and deservingly was named MVP at the Senior B Men’s Western Canadian fastball championship in 1993. He shared his athletic skills by coaching hockey, fastball and girls softball and in later years, golf became his obsession. As with all sports, he excelled at that too, and achieved his first hole-in-one in 2018. Derek was a dedicated, enthusiastic fan of the NFL and his LA Rams, as well as the Montreal Canadiens. He proudly wore the #29 (chosen from his first favourite goalie Ken Dryden). Fittingly, he battled pancreatic cancer for 29 months, and passed on the 29th day of December. He will always be remembered for his positivity and determination to the very end.

Derek is survived by his loving wife Dawn, children Brendan and Danika Lewis; granddaughter Willow LaBelle, mother Louise Laird (stepfather Jack Laird), sister Teresa Sylvestre (Tony Sylvestre), and nephew Dylan Cummings.

Derek was predeceased by his father Gordon Lewis.

Derek, to me, “Cuz”, was like a brother to me for so many years. We got to know him through fastball but then also became friends outside of the game. Derek was a very talented player and respected by so many, some who have reached out, asking me to pass on their condolences. He will long be remembered and missed.
I saw him on the street here in Heritage Hills a couple of months before Christmas. We talked for a bit and he had such a positive attitude. I will always remember the smile he had on his face that day….he was off to see his granddaughter.
    Much love to you all.

  8. Dawn and family- our thoughts and prayers go out to you- words cannot express how sad I was when I heard the news of Derek’s passing. He was a genuinely great person and will be sadly missed by us and all that knew him. I really enjoyed coming over and watching his Rams play my Dolphins and having some pops and some laughs, gonna miss him. Bumping into him at various places around town was always enjoyable, he was always so upbeat and enjoyed great conversation, usually involving sports and always ended with him reminding me that he and I needed to get together for a round of golf. I truly regret that it never worked out for me timewise and I will always wish that I could have just made the time to let him take me out and probably teach me a few things on the course. Rest In Peace my friend, see you on the other side.

  11. Dear Dawn and family, please accept my most sincere condolences on the passing of Derek. I was lucky enough to get to know Deeker when we both couldn’t seem to satisfy our thirst for fastball. What a pleasure it was to play next to such an athlete and friend.I hope that you can find comfort in the fact that Derek was so well loved and respected. Bless you all, Kevin McMenamon

  12. Dear Lewis Family,
Please accept my most sincere condolences. I knew Deek through fastball when I played for the Exshaw Steels, Canmore Crushers and Canmore Centennials from the mid 70s to the mid 80s. The Cochrane Cougars were always a competitive rival and one of the main reasons was because Derek excelled at third base and hitting. My fastball career culminated with the Centennials under the coaching of Ken Ritchie & Kazzie and I had the pleasure to play tournaments with Deek, Chub and Kevin. I will always remember their inclusion as a measurable experience. Our thoughts are with you and do rest assured that conversations with former teammates and members of the Foothills Fastball League will always remember Deek most fondly.

  14. My sincere condolences to the family. I had the privilege of working with Derek on and off from 2009 to 11 while working at Exshaw. It was always good to catch up with him and share stories of both work and family. He spoke with pride of what he’d accomplished in both areas of his life, especially with his family. All the best at this difficult time.

  19. Dawn, Brendan and Danika,

I was lucky enough to call Deek my friend and coworker. I too had 30 years with Lafarge, fortunate to have the the skill, knowledge and tenacity of Derek working along side me for many of those years. I have the fondest memories of being close friends sharing the trials of our boys growing up together eventually sharing sweeping up cement dust together. More often than not in conversation he would finish with how lucky he was with the amount of love he had and was given by the three of you. I’m so sorry he is gone.

I was saddened to hear today that Derek had passed. I will always have many fond memories of Derek, in High School and after, watching him play football with the Cobras, hockey with the Generals and, in summer fastball in Seebe. Derek always had a positive can-do attitude and a smile to match. His family was always a top priority in his life and my condolences to all – he will most certainly be missed dearly.
