LEPPARD, Helen Kathern (nee Young)

August 22, 1930 – April 17, 2019

Helen left us peacefully, surrounded by her family. Mom to Lynn, Tom (Karen) and Faye (Rob Crooks); Grandma/ “Tight Buns” to Christine (Mike Hoblak), Jason, Erin, and Rachel; GG to Benjamin and Oliver; Sister to Germaine and Donna (Les Mash) and Auntie Helen to many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Phil (d. 2008) her loving husband of 58 years and her brother Ron.

A native Calgarian, Helen was a passionate advocate for her community. She was a 50 year volunteer for Calgary Meals on Wheels, a lifelong member of Foothills Lutheran Church, and a founding member of the Parkdale Nifty-Fifties. She imbued her children and grandchildren with her sense of civic duty, which she lived every day as an informed and passionate citizen, volunteer, and notably as Chief Returning Officer for Calgary Bow.

Helen was never one to sit idle. She curled at the North Hill Curling Club well into her 80s and spent many hours with her friends in the latest bridge, crib or shuffleboard tournament. She loved flowers and gardening. Cooking was her passion; if there weren’t 20 for dinner, it almost wasn’t worth it. Why make 1 apple pie when you could make 10 and spend time with your grandchildren while doing so? Above all, she loved her family, and was never shy about saying or showing it, especially through food. She will be greatly missed.

A celebration of Helen’s life will be held on May 24, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Foothills Lutheran Church, 3104 – 34th Ave NW, Calgary, AB. Light lunch and refreshments to follow. Condolences may be forwarded through

I’m so sorry for your loss, Helen always treated me with unfailing kindness and love. Even after parting from the family she continued to take me for lunch for my birthday, Christmas and Easter every year until the last two, you have no idea how much I looked forward to these and how much I enjoyed them, catching up on the news and just chatting.
I would love to attend her Celebration but unfortunately it is two days after I have back surgery so I won’t be able to make it but will be there is my thoughts and prayers.
