January 13, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts we announce that John Leniuk passed away peacefully in the Rockyview Hospital on January 13, 2019 at the age of 90. He will be reunited with his dear wife Ella who passed away in September 2015.

John was born in Tiny, SK. on March 7, 1928 and was one of twelve children. Softball was a favorite past time and John was a skilled pitcher taking part in many tournaments during high school. He became a teacher in rural Saskatchewan. and then decided to move to Hanna, AB. to teach, where he met his lovely wife Ella (Brunner). He continued to teach in many Calgary schools over his career. John loved music and played many instruments for most of his life. He enjoyed playing the accordion at his 90th birthday party last year. Reading and spending sunny days in the garden was a favorite past time.

Travels with Ella all over the world in his 50’s, 60’s and 70’s brought him great joy. John loved photography and has so many albums of all family memories and vacations. The grandkids love looking at those books. John and Ella volunteered at Mayfair for 20 years and belonged to St. Gerard’s Parish for over 50 years. Haysboro was home since 1966 and John has the best neighbors anyone could ask for. He always thanked the good Lord for guidance and all the blessings he has been given in life. John loved his family and always made them a priority. We will always be grateful.

John will be lovingly remembered by daughter Kathy and son Lenard (Monika); four grandchildren, Travis (Hetzy), Chantell (Tyrel), Mariell and Dustin (Amy). John had four great-grandchildren, Lukas, Brooklynn, Andrew, and Emmy. He is fondly remembered by his older sister Natalie Pysemny of Canora, SK. as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

  4. Was sorry to hear this, he looked so good on his birthday. I grew up around the corner on Hillgrove Dr. and then lived across the street from John and Ella for a few years also. He always seemed to always have that smile. He was one the last left on the old street I grew up on.
My sympathies to Kathy, Lenard and family.

  6. Gerard & Hedy Luijkx :

It is with great sadness that we lost such a great friend. John would be at peace now being with Jesus and his beloved Ella. He reminded me each time, after dropping him off at his home following Saturday night Mass and a great dinner, that he was not afraid to be alone as Jesus was with him always. He was so kind and patient with Hedy, each wearing their “aprons” with pride during dinner, always updating on family. Our sympathies to Kathy, Lenard and their families who John and Ella loved so deeply.
