LARATTA, Maria

August 22, 1938 – San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy
June 26, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

On Wednesday, June 26, 2019, Maria Laratta, loving wife of the late Giovanni “John” Battista, devoted mother of Rosanna, Aldo (Linda), Tony (Melaney) and adoring Nana of Olivia, Sofia, Thea, Laila and Dante, passed away in the arms of her loving family at the age of 80 years.

Maria was born August 22, 1938 in San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1954. The love of her life, John Battista, joined her in 1956 and they were married in Calgary, AB on January 5, 1957 where they enjoyed fifty seven beautiful years together. Maria, as an award winning realtor with Block Brothers Reality, teamed with John to found Laratta Homes in 1978. She will be remembered for her quick wit, talented storytelling, beautiful singing voice and great sense of style. Generous in spirit, her family and friends were always the recipients of her gifts of cooking and baking. Maria had a passion for poetry and music and was a talented seamstress. Her greatest passion in life was her family to whom she was fiercely devoted. She will be dearly missed.

Along with her children and grandchildren, Maria leaves behind her brothers, John (Joanne) and Pat (Jeanne); sister, Rosie Martel; brother-in-law, Luigi (Emma); and numerous family and friends.

Maria was preceded in death by her husband John Battista, parents, Francesco and Teresa Mosca; brother Saverio “Harvey” (June); sister Caterina “Kay” (Domenic); parents-in-law Costantino and Rosa Laratta; nephew Tom; as well as brothers and sisters-in-law, Francesco, Hazel, Caterina and Saverio.

Relatives and friends are invited to Tributes at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (1566 Northmount Drive NW) on Thursday, July 4, 2019 at 11:00am. Following Tributes, the Funeral Mass will be celebrated with the Rev. Domenic, presider. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery Mausoleum (3219 – 4 Street NW). Reception to follow at McInnis and Holloway’s Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North). Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

Mom greatly appreciated the phone calls and visits from numerous family and friends. We are grateful to Uncle Domenic and Karen Mosca who modeled authentic compassion, Zufan and Tsega who cared for mom as if she was their own mother, and Felipe Pacheco who raised mom’s spirits with prayers and encouragement. We would like to thank the doctors, nurses and caregivers that provided exceptional care and comfort to mom over the last many years, including: Dr. Traboulsi and Nurse Sandra at Cardiac Function Clinic, Foothills Medical Centre, Dr. Katherine Savoia, mom’s pharmacist friends at the Market Mall Pharmacy, Nurse Barbara Chan with AHS Homecare, Seniors North, and the Morrison Unit Team at Intercare Brentwood Care Centre. Special thanks to Dr. Sengar and Lulu, nurses Leanne, Lou, Au and Sarah, and Mark, Annie and Rita who made mom’s sleepless nights tolerable. Thank you all for making a difference.

My heart is so very broken to have lost my favorite auntie and second mommy. I feel so blessed to have had her in my life in so many ways… as role model, mentor, cheerleader, babysitter, fashion stylist, teacher, comedy partner, Italian translator, inspiration, confidant… She meant so many things to me. How I wish that I could have attended her celebration of life, but, quite literally my heart couldn’t take it. So my many, many condolences I send to you, my cousins ~ thoughts, prayers, hugs, kisses, love. I will miss your mommy, my auntie so much. I do look forward to the day I see auntie in Heaven, and I can see her and nonna and mom together now… laughing, dancing, baking, reminiscing and sharing so many humorous and touching memories of family and sisterhood. I feel so blessed to have so many good memories! But I will miss her. Until I see you in Heaven my auntie Mary, I love you forever, your little Teresa ♥️♥️♥️
