October 6, 2015 – Calgary, AB

Mrs. Jean Grace Lane (nee Whiteside), of Calgary, AB passed away quietly at Foothills Hospital on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at the age of 77 years.

Jean was born to parents, Frank & Louise Whiteside, on September 10, 1938 in Calgary, AB, and grew up with her twin sister and younger brother. After attending Stanley Jones School and Crescent Heights High School, Jean started out in life working for the Hudson Bay Company. She continued there until she met the love of her life, Don Lane. On September 9, 1961, she married her sweetheart. Jean loved camping, visiting with her family & friends, cheating at cards with her daughters-in-law and grandsons, making crafts and being the local baker for her annual craft sale. In 1980, Jean introduced Sledge Hockey to Canada from a small desk in her living room in Medicine Hat, AB. From there, it grew into a Para-olympic sport, of which she was extremely proud. Jean received many awards for her work with the disabled community. She was awarded the A.A.B.R.D. Legacy Award “Recognizing Outstanding Contribution in Recreation for Special Populations in The Province of Alberta” while in Medicine Hat (1987). Jean also received “The White Hatter” award from the City of Calgary (1991). She was presented with the “Alberta Centennial Medal” for her contribution to sports for the Disabled (2005). After Jean and Don were married, they had four wonderful sons. They made their home, first in Calgary, then Red Deer, and a few years later in Edmonton. Keeping on the go, the next move landed them in High River, then Medicine Hat and lastly back to Calgary where they have been since 1987.

Jean Lane is survived by her husband, Don Lane; her son, Doug (Marni) Lane and grandson, Derrick Lane; her son, Darrel (Benita) Lane and grandsons, Cole, Marlon and Samuel Lane; her son David Lane; her twin sister, Ann (Jerry) Johnston; her brother in law, Jack Lane, numerous nieces and nephews; and so very many friends. Jean Lane was predeceased by her son, Darren Lane (1962); her father, Frank Whiteside (1973); her mother, Louise Whiteside (1991); and her brother, Harvey Whiteside (1997).
