LACHMUTH, Ruth Freda (nee Merling)

April 30, 1923 – Edmonton, Alberta
October 23, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Ruth Freda Lachmuth (nee Merling) passed away Monday, October 23, 2017 at the age 94 at Bow View Manor, Calgary, AB.

Ruth was born in Edmonton, AB, on April 30, 1923 but was raised on a farm in nearby Dufield, AB. Like many children of that era, she completed grade eight and then began full-time work on the family farm. In the late 1940’s she moved to Calgary to begin working on the manufacturing line at United Apparel, sewing shirts and other articles of clothing. United Apparel was owned by her sister Olga and Olga’s husband Bill. This work as a seamstress served her well throughout her life. Ruth was a home-based business pioneer making clothes and doing alterations primarily for women and her family.

When Ruth began to attend the first congregation of Jehovah Witnesses in Calgary, she met the Lachmuth sisters, Tillie and Leona. They were quick to introduce her to their brother Ed who was the single father of twins. Ed and Ruth fell in love and became life-long friends. Ruth took on the mantle of motherhood to the twins, Lenore and Lyle. Their son Rod was born nine years later. She was a strict, loving mother with a great sense of humour and an unexpected competitive streak that came out when playing cards and board games with her kids.

In addition to her skills as a seamstress she was a skilled knitter, rug maker, baker, and gardener. She delighted in providing wholesome and large meals for her family and frequent guests. She will be always remembered for her faithful attendance at meetings, conventions and field service, her love of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, her passion for fishing, and, like her biblical namesake, her hospitality.

Ruth is survived by her son Rod and step-son Lyle; grandchildren Alex, Matt, Tafline, Tara, and Troy; great-grandchildren Logan, Makena, Chloe, Logan, and Carter. She was predeceased by her husband of sixty-two years, Edward; her parents Herman Merling and Julia (nee Helm); brothers Ewald, and Ronald; sister Olga Wooll (nee Merling); step-daughter Lenore Henker.

There will be no memorial as per Ruth’s wishes. Condolences may be forwarded through

The family would like to thank the staff of Bow View Manor for their kind and generous care for their mother and grandmother.

This condolence is coming from Charles and Valerie Turner, We send our sincere condolences to the Lachmuth family, especially to Lyle who many years ago served with me in the Congregation. You Mother was a wonderful example to you all, and much loved by Val and I. As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses she knew that dying is like a deep sleep with resurrection to life here on the earth in paradise, Ruth an avid reader of Gods word knew that mankind was not meant to die, though presently we all die Gods purpose will in his time be realized. Please accept our deepest sympathy and Christian love. Lyle please don’t hesitate to email me… Charles and Val Turner
