LACEY, Naomi

November 16, 1937 – Sutton, Surrey, England
January 1, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Naomi, truly beloved wife of John Lacey and mother of Martin (Jennifer Boulanger), Louise (Norman Rokosh) and William (Dawn Evans), and adored grandmother of Alex (Dan Jacobsen), Simon, Emma, Sylvie, Matthew, Jeremy and Andrew, and great-grandmother to Bjorn and Anders Lacey Jacobsen, died January 1, 2017 after years of battling dementia.

Naomi was the only daughter of Joseph Lambert and Sylvia Grace Jameson of Great Brockhamhurst, Surrey, England. She has a brother, Angus (Pat), living in Shropshire, England, a half-sister, Julia Allison and a half-brother, Robert Minto Jameson, and is predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Paul and Ian. Naomi met her husband John in 1955, who proposed to her on their first date. Following their marriage on June 26, 1956, she emigrated to Canada in July 1956 with her husband on the steamship CP Empress of France, to settle in Calgary – first on 12 Avenue S.W., and then in Scarborough, followed by eight years in the country, and finally settling on Canada Day 1967 in Elbow Park. Naomi finished her education in Britain at Winkfield Place, where amongst other things she became a Cordon Bleu chef.

She took a degree in Interior Decorating after arriving in Canada from the New York School of Interior Design and was an accomplished musician, writer and artist. After the children left home, she entered the University of Calgary to take a Classics degree, majoring in Latin and Greek, and obtaining the Classics Silver Medal as an outstanding student.

Following her degree, she went into post-graduate work to obtain a MA from the University of Calgary for her work on Ovid, the first post-graduate degree granted by the Classics (GLR) Department at the University of Calgary. Upon completion of her post-graduate degree, she taught Latin at the University for some 10 years. She was appointed to the Faculty Council by the Alumni Association and was elected to the Senate of the University.

She was a great lover of the arts, particularly music, and together with John, Naomi became an avid supporter of the arts in Calgary and was a significant proponent of the belief that for a great city, one must have a healthy and vibrant arts community. She spent a large amount of her time assisting the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. She was the inspiration for `The Friends of the CPO and Musical Heritage“, she helped chair Cork and Canvas for 10 years, and was the driving force behind the Virtuoso Programme.

She was loved by many and was selfless in helping others. She gave up so much when she came to Canada but she gave her family and friends over 60 wonderful years.

God bless you, Nao – you will always be with us.

Our thanks for the unfailing efforts of so many people. Dr. Norman Yee, the most special and personal physician one could hope to have, Gloria Ebanks, Vinnette Morgan, and Fe Balde, her tireless friends and aides, Elena Calina, her special help for many years, her many temporary aides Sandy, Hannah and Winnie, and the staff at Maison, who were wonderful with their support and care over the last three years. Thanks also to Dr. Gohel and Dr. Wolf and the staff at the Calgary South Health Campus for their fantastic help in Naomi’s time of need. Naomi loved hats and the family would appreciate the ladies attending the service and reception if they would wear their favourite hat.

Funeral Services will be held at Cathedral Church of the Redeemer (218 – 7th Avenue S.E.) on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Naomi Lacey, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Please know our thoughts are still with you and the rest of your family as you adjust to this difficult change. Losing Naomi’s physical presence hopefully can be filled with remembrances from the decades of family and personal experiences shared together.
