KYLE, Ann Lucy (nee Scarisbrick)

October 27, 1952 – Palo Alto, California
December 31, 2018 – Calgary Alberta

We are sad to share that Ann Lucy Kyle (nee Scarisbrick) passed away peacefully at the age of 66 while surrounded by loved ones at the Foothills Medical Centre. Ann fought a brave battle after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.

Ann was born in Palo Alto, California and grew up in Victoria, BC. She resided for a while in Edmonton, AB but lived most of her adult life in Calgary, AB. Ann attended Oak Bay High School in Victoria and went on to attain a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Victoria. From there she completed her Doctorate of Zoology at the University of Alberta. She worked a number of years in scientific research in Calgary labs before settling in to doing scientific editing for clients.

Ann was known for her kindness, her sense of gratitude and her thoughtfulness. She was a genuine soul, hardworking, diplomatic, and incredibly well organized. Her passions in life included being with her family and friends, folk dancing, her Prairie Sky Co-housing community and the Calgary Unitarian Church. She enjoyed hiking and camping, bird-watching, spending time with her dogs, and traveling.

Ann is survived by her husband, Jim; two daughters, Samantha and Holly; son, Darien; step children, Nicole and Dan; five grandchildren, Evangeline, Luke, Mary-Stephanie, Anya, and Callie; father, Richard; brother, Roy; nephew, Jeff; and nieces, Shannon and Jennifer.

Memorial Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel Of The Bells Funeral Home 2720 Centre St N, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre of the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

As much as Ann loved flowers, at the family’s request, if friends so desire in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes can be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: 1 (866) 412-4222. www.albertacancer.ca or Nature Conservancy of Canada, 245 Eglinton Avenue East, Suite 410, Toronto, ON M4P 3J1 Telephone: 1 (800) 465-800. www.natureconservancy.ca.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff at the Foothills Medical Centre for their outstanding care, compassion, and empathy that were shared with Ann and her family every day.

In living memory of Ann Kyle, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB, T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  7. Ann was a bright light, and will be greatly missed by her communities. I recall her joyful energy from folk dancing many years ago, and her gentle spirit more recently among the Unitarians.

May the new year bring you all comfort in her memory.

  8. Ann was such a leading light in the Calgary Unitarians community. She contributed in so many ways. One area where I will always remember her great leadership was in the crafting of our new mission statement. She showed great vision, patience and passion here and I will think of her every time I state our intent to …”grow in wisdom, welcome and deepen relationships and act for a just and sustainable world”. We were blessed to have her as part of our Unitarian community and she will be sorely missed.

  10. I am so very, very sad to hear this news. Ann was one of the first people I met when I joined UCC coming up to 20 years ago later this month. We took a course together; can’t remember for sure if it was the Introduction to UU-ism or perhaps it was a book study. Her son Darien & my daughter were in the OWL program together later on. In any case, she was such a kind and friendly person towards me then & continued to be in recent years, when I have been absent from church more than I care to admit due to a number of work & family issues. I will always remember her warmth & caring, especially when she, and Jim, of course, agreed to house my son for a few days about 3 or 4 years ago when we were working through some intense adolescent issues with him. My deepest sympathies go out to you, Jim & your family. Ann was such a cheerful, giving person. I will miss her deeply.

Dear Jim, Sam, Holly, Darien & all Ann’s family, I am so sorry for your loss. I am very sad, but feel it was a privilege to have known Ann. We met almost 25 years ago at the UU Church at which time we both had babies in its nursery. Those babies, Darien and my son Alex, are now grown-up young men. I greatly admired Ann’s huge capabilities, loving kindness, and skills at single motherhood – not to mention folk dancing. She eventually brought Jim into her life, & to both Calgary Unitarians & to Prairie Sky, a fact we all appreciated and continue to appreciate. Until our sons moved out a few years back, they practically lived in each others’ houses. I learned only last week that some of the times Alex went to Darien’s/ Ann’s house, he’d stay over for supper or a visit with Ann even if Darien were not home! It’s no wonder that as a young teen when asked, Alex stated that if his parents were to die before he turned 18, the person he wished to be his guardian was Ann Kyle, whom he sort of saw as his “other mother”. Ann, many of us will greatly miss your friendship and wisdom. We know you are now a shining star up above looking after us all and continuing to leave your loving, dancing, gardening, animal-loving legacy. Rest in peace.
With love, from Hazel, and Greg plus Gaby, Alex, Liam, Grace, & Kate

  13. With Ann’s passing I would like to reflect on the remarkable moments that I have shared with Ann over the years. She was one of the best scientists I’ve had the pleasure to work with. She had a crystal-clear mind which was superb when teaching and writing about science. It was a joy to work with a person with professionalism at the highest levels, who was very intelligent and who contributed tremendously to our work with no selfishness or arrogance. She was a beautiful person to work with.
Ann had clear priorities starting with her love for Jim and her family, as well as friends and neighbours. Ann was a green thumb for sure and taught many of us all about gardening.
Ann the woman of many talents, discreet and soft spoken, but fully energized and skilled at folk-dancing, teaching, hiking, camping and birding. She put her outstanding organization skills to the benefit of all who connected with her.
I am fortunate that my life and hers crossed paths in so many ways, both professionally and personally. I keep many, many fond memories of Ann: A big loss for sure. I will miss her terribly.

Sending my love and thoughts to Jim, Samantha, Holly, Darien, her father and her beautiful extended family.
    Love,
    Paule

  19. Jim, Samantha, Holly and Darien. So sorry to hear of Ann’s passing. Will be thinking of you at this tender time.

I was lucky to have had some lovely times with Ann, hiking, road tripping, canoeing, dancing, gardening and we did “minutes” together. I was especially impressed by how Ann would confidently take on a task and do it thoroughly without complaining… all the seedlings she started at Prairie Sky and the volumes of minutes she did for the meetings.

She also put herself into the fun things like dancing and hiking and snowshoeing and I can still see her smile that would light up the room and let you know that all is well and let’s have a good time. She was a great example to me and will always be in my heart. I will not be able to make it to Calgary for Ann’s memorial but will be thinking of you and have a candle lit here in Powell River.

  25. My Aunty Ann was such a huge influence in the woman I am today . She was a strong, brilliant, beautiful soul and the world will be a little less without her in it, but it was also that much more amazing because of what she left with all of us who had the pleasure of being loved by her. She left a legacy on my soul that I catch myself already passing into my own children. She will be missed so much ❤️.

Oh, you guys, I’m devastated by the news of Ann’s passing. I just can’t get my mind around it. I know she and I didn’t talk much, but I thought of her every day and sent prayers and good vibes. I’ve been wanting to get out and get a REAL card, because, you know, sometimes a real card is just nice to keep. Got out of the hospital and pretty much picked up pneumonia, so I’m in bed, thinking about all of you, and Ann, and sending copious amounts of more prayers, hugs, and good vibes. I hope it helps. Love you so much! – “Auntie” Valli

  35. Ann is expert in the fine art of being a human being -she knows how to live in the present and invites others in, too. She is thoughtful because she thinks, she is considerate because she considers. We, the lucky ones who know her have experienced her loving, inclusive magic and that special thing she does with time: not slowing it nor speeding it up, she expands it so that each moment matters.
    Blessings always, beautiful woman

Ann will remain for us a pillar of wit, wisdom, intelligence, resilience, fortitude, generosity, joie de vivre, conscience, planfulness, grace and the highest ideals of friendship. It my words sound over the top, so was she! Her smile, beauty, readiness to share, clarity in teaching dances, enjoyment of jazz, klezmer and other music – there is so much to remember and to miss.
