Dear George — we will miss your laughter, your smiles, your joie de vivre. We will also miss your generosity to the university, and your contributions to overseas students. We acknowledge the international imagination which you brought to Calgary long before the popularity of globalism, and which was exemplified in the journal which you created decades ago and which you continued to foster. Our colleagues annually celebrate an international dinner with students, faculty and staff, an institution that you helped create. Rest well, my friend. It was our privilege to have known you.

It is with such a sad heart, I am writing this. We have beautiful memories of George sitting behind my family at St. Barnabas. George always had a smile on his face, loved the boys antics in church when they were suppose to be quiet. My Mom, Marj Norris and I loved visiting with both George and Suzanne during coffee hour. It was a blessing to get to know you and learn from both of you about your heritage, country and traditions. George we wish you peace and joy and know you are in God’s house now. Suzanne our love to you and your family at this sad time. You are in our thoughts and prays. May God hold you in his strong hands at this sad time.

    Dear Susy,
I am so sorry to hear about George’s death. I know he hadn’t been doing well after that fall, but this is still a shock. He was a lovely man and a great colleague. His 80th birthday party was so much fun, and I still have some of George’s Hand Cream! My sister Margot and I will always remember our fabulous trip to Kerala (especially to Kochi), thanks to the help you and George gave us. You were fortunate to have had a long and happy marriage so you will miss him a great deal.

When I first met George in 1969, I felt his genuineness as a human being and immediately saw his love for fast cars! I was just a boy. As I grew, I don’t think we had a conversation through the years that somehow, didn’t default to body designs, superior aspiration, break horespower and torque. I learned from him. I admired him.

My father Ram, and George were not only kindred colleagues but, friends in the true sense. George’s smile will always be with me along with his unique and contagious laughter.

We share your loss Suzy in every way.

Rest peacefully George, and know that you will not be forgotten.

With warmest memories and deepest condolences,

Georgekutty Appachan was loved dearly by all at Kovoor House, Kottayam. During my school years in Kottayam I used to wait eagerly, every month for him to send me a copy of “The Economist” magazine as well as the “Road and Track” magazine.

Georgekutty Appachan and Susy Ammachi always made it a point to spend quite a lot of time at home visiting my grandmother (his sister) and the rest of us here. Both him and I shared a love for fast cars and we always found ourselves talking about new cars on the horizon or old stories about cars his father (my great grandfather) owned.

You will be missed.. Especially your laugh and the word “bore-an” that used to accompany the laugh.

Dearest George, I remember when I first met you back in 1987 and how you welcomed me as a staff member to the Department of Sociology. Over the years we established a wonderful friendship and you would sit in the chair in my office so many times with your big, beautiful smile making me laugh at one thing or another. When I would see you standing in my doorway, I would know I was in for a wonderful visit. What a beautiful human being you are. Thank you for all your smiles, thank you for welcoming me to the Department, thank you and Suzie for having my husband, Dwight, and I into your home and thank you for letting us share your 80th birthday with you. There never was a party like that one. I remember your cars and the joy that they brought to you. I will always think of you with smiles because yours was so big and so genuine.
