KURAN, Gregory Joseph

March 20, 1954 – Calgary, Alberta
February 26, 2016 – Shanghai, China

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Gregory (Greg) Joseph Kuran on February 26, 2016, in Shanghai, China.

Always a proud Calgarian, Greg was born March 20, 1954. Greg graduated from the UofC with a BSc Chemical Engineering Degree in 1976 and married his high school sweetheart, Debbi, one month later. Their honeymoon was spent moving to Fort St. John B.C. where Greg worked for Pacific Petroleums. In 1982, he joined Home Oil Company and spent the rest of his career through Anderson Exploration and finally, Devon Energy. All throughout his working days, he loved being an Engineer because “Engineers Rule the World!”. Greg retired in 2010, and he and Debbi planned to travel the world. They went to Machu Picchu, Alhambra, Petra, the Dead Sea, the Vatican, the Leaning of Tower of Pisa, the Great Wall of China, Ayers Rock and through the Suez Canal. Greg and Debbi also visited the Caribbean, Hawaii, Tahiti and Fiji. One of their favourite places was St. Maarten and they went back so often they were considered “locals”. Since 1989, Greg has been an enthusiastic Scouter, leader and Past President of the Chinook Scouts Foundation. He was pleased Andrew and Elizabeth achieved their Chief Scout award along with all his Hawkwood 214 Scouts. In 1999, Greg received the Scout Fellowship Award followed by many more in the following years. He believed in supporting youth and wanted Scouting and all it offers be available to everyone. Greg was a devoted husband to Debbi and would look after her before anyone. He was extremely proud of his children Andrew (Chandra) Kuran, Beverly (Michael) Sherban and Elizabeth (Mitch) Schinnour. His three grandchildren, Michael and Emma Kuran and Rowan Schinnour brought him joy every moment.

In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, Greg also leaves to mourn sisters, Anne Johnston and Cindy (Kim) White and their sons, Jeff (Lindsay) Johnston and Douglas White. He will also be missed by Irene Hauck, Morley (Cec) Rondiak and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Anne Kuran.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (Corner of Northmount Drive & Northland Drive N.W.) on Monday, March 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. Debbi, Andrew, Beverly and Elizabeth. Our family is so saddened to hear of Greg’s passing and your loss. Our thoughts are certainly with you. Greg was a mentor, champion, colleague and friend in our days together at Home Oil and the years after and I can’t imagine where I’d be today with out his support and teaching. I enjoyed his humour and mischievous barbs as we worked the engineering problems of the day and will forever remember that “cat swallowed the canary” smile. I know how much he loved the adventure of travel and I’m happy to see he and Debbi got so much of that done in his short retirement.

There are so many times I remember spending time through the Scouting program with Andrew and Uncle Greg. He always had a great sense of humor and knew how to keep the mood light. From CJ ’97 to CJ ’01, he always pushed my brothers and I to do that little bit extra through sarcasm and encouragement.

I’ll never forget the time Andrew, Uncle Greg, Dad and I went to a Stamps game for my birthday in early September. The game ended 15-9 and all the points were scored on field goals. But that didn’t matter, because Uncle Greg and Dad got to sit together and be the grouchy pair that they always had been together while Andrew and I watched a football game. A Stamps game holds a really special place with me because of Uncle Greg and Andrew.

I loved spending time with Uncle Greg. He was a great man, a kind spirit who always made time just to chat. His infectious smile and amazing personality made every trip up to the house a fun time.

My condolences to Auntie Debbi, Andrew, Bev, Liz and your family.

Deb, I am so sad to hear of Greg’s passing. I truly loved him like an older brother and owe him a great deal for all the knowledge he passed on to me. He was so enthusiastic in his retirement and was always suggesting that Jas and I join you guys on one of your excursions. I am glad he has had these years to truly enjoy his passion of traveling with you.

  8. Our condolences to the Kuran family at this very difficult time, I am so sad and upset to hear of Greg’s passing. Greg was truly my mentor all through the Anderson and Devon years and was an amazing teacher, there is no way I’d be where I am without his support and guidance. Greg was so proud of you Debbi and all his kids, I remember him often sharing stories of what was going on in your lives. I was so lucky to have met Greg at the start of my career and be able to learn from him over the years. He truly was passionate about Engineering and passing on his knowledge and was so very good at this, a skill that so very few have. I learned more from Greg than anyone else in my career and cherish all the memories, he wanted and expected you to understand the concepts and was willing to spend his time helping you accomplish this. I still have material and notes on scraps of paper that he wrote down for me and use it to this day. I want you to know what an impact Greg had on me and how I truly appreciated everything he did and I wish would have told him. I have so many great memories and laughs and met so many great people in his group.

Remember all the great times and the amazing adventures you all shared with Greg.

    Graham, Kimberly, and family

I was very saddened and surprised to read of Greg’s passing. He and I worked at Home Oil for many years, and I also knew him through Scouting. On my 50th anniversary of membership in Scouts-Canada I had a traumatic brain injury Chinook Council staff did not renew my membership but Greg continued to contact at least once a year in his role with the Fellowship. He, like me, was an avid traveler and I shall miss him very much. – Member #46, Chinook Scouts Foundation

  13. Greg was a driving force during my time on the Chinook Scouts Foundation Board and we grieve his passing. A proud engineer, he took jibes well and passed them out (especially to lawyers). He never hesitated to take on a project. We will miss him and his contributions to our community. I am traveling so will miss the Tributes gathering tonight, but will be there in spirit with the other Scouters.
