September 15, 1974 – Nasir Upper Nile, Sudan
June 23, 2018 – Calgary , Alberta

Khor Kouth of Calgary, passed away on June 23, 2018 at the age of 43 years.

Khor Gatkek Kouth was born on September 15, 1974 in South Sudan, Nasir Town to Gatkek Kouth Nyuer and Nyabuok Bangoot. His parents were from South Sudan, Gajiok, Chielang, and Chielony sub-clan.

Khor left Itang on January 1991 and became a child soldier in the Red Army with 50,000 other boys of South Sudan. When he reached Kapoeta he was selected to be trained as a professional soldier. He was taken to New Kapoeta military training base for full military training. He began his full combatant’s military training in May 1, 1991 and graduated with the rank of Sargent on May 15, 1992 from the battalions “Koryom Two”. A few days later, their battalion was ordered by C-In-C Dr. John Garang to liberate Juba.

While in Juba, Khor became sick and was given pass permits to leave the frontline for further treatment in Torit district. Before his treatment was finished (and before he was able to go back to his deployment zone), the National Islamic Front (NIF) dislodged SPLA forces and captured Torit.

From there, Khor traveled to Pageri district and stayed there for few months. In August 1992 he defected with chief general staff William Nyuon Bany to join the South Sudan Independent Movement (SSIM), which was led by Dr. Riek Machar. Khor served in tough operations for many months, but eventually reached his hometown Nasir in March 1993.

Khor arrived in Canada on October 9, 2001 and met the mother of his five children in 2002. She gave birth to their first-born child in June 2003. In September 2009, Khor graduated with a BA in philosophy from the University of Calgary.

Khor is survived by four siblings (two brothers and two sisters) and five children.

Condolence Messages

  1. Robert & Marie Mile

We wanted to share our condolences with Khor’s family. It is never easy to have to say goodbye to a loved one. The pain of loss can be unbearable. Our Creator promises us that one day this pain will be just a memory. That beautiful promise can be found at Revelation 21:3,4. Our pain and suffering will be a thing of the past, and we can cry tears of joy as we welcome back the ones that we love so much. We hope you find comfort in those promises.
