KRITSCH, Sonja Maria

July 16, 1927 – Ratibor, Silesia, Germany
February 27, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, in Calgary on February 27 at the age of 89 with her youngest daughter at her side.

Sonja was born on July 16th 1927 in the town of Ratibor (then known as Prussia Germany). Her family fled to Eichstatt Bavaria during the Second World War finding safe haven there. Sonja grew up and worked in Eichstatt, Adelschlag and Ingolstadt Germany. At the age of 27 in 1954 she found passage to Canada on the ship Arosa Kulm with her two young sons. After arriving in Canada she married and had 3 more children: Esther, Steven, and Sonja. She settled her family in Canmore Alberta amongst the Rocky Mountains that she so dearly loved. Sonja met her husband Karl Kritsch and blessed him with a daughter, Elka. Karl chose to stand beside his wife and raise her children as his own.

Sonja became a permanent part of the town of Canmore while working at the Canmore Hotel Coffee shop for over 5 years cooking and serving homemade meals for the town which she came to dearly love. She was notorious for her chicken noodle soup and cinnamon buns. Most will remember Sonja for her spunk, her witty comments, and her fantastic humor. Sonja was most proud of her time working at the 1988 Olympics. She was also a diehard Elvis and Sinatra fan; dancing and humming to their songs right up until the day she left this world behind. Sonja was a passionate crafter and painter who had a weakness for late night chocolate, dogs, birds, and especially hummingbirds.

Sonja is survived by her two sons Helmut Faupel (Isy Schumann); Steven (Brenda) Bathory; her three daughters Esther (Gary) Zesiger; Sonja Bathory (Bill Patterson) and Elka Visser (Cliff Rea) and her daughter in law Alana Faupel. She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren Teddy, Chris, Matthew, Kenneth, Amy, Sabrina, Jason, Jody, Candice, Becky, Marcy, Karl and Anna and 15 great grandchildren. In Germany she is survived by two nieces, Silvia (Gunther) Beitinger and Barbara Grönling, along with their children. Sonja was predeceased by her beloved husband Karl in 2002 and her eldest son Gerhardt in 2008, who both nicknamed Sonja ‘Poopsy’. She was also predeceased by her four sisters and one brother.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 11:00 am at Saint Michaels Church Hall in Canmore, Alberta with a luncheon tea to follow. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Bow Valley SPCA in her name at 123 Bow Meadows Crescent Canmore, Alberta T1W 2W8 (403) 609-2022. http://www.bowvalleyspca.org/

In living memory of Sonja Kritsch, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th STREET S.E.. Telephone: 1-800-661-1599.

One of the highlights in my life thus far was working with Sonya at the Canmore Hotel coffee shop – never a dull moment! And every morning she brightened up the lives of all the crew guys and regulars who would drop by just to get their morning coffee and a taste of whatever Sonya was dishing out! And special thanks to Cootchie who arranged a coffee date with herself, Sonya, Nana and Brandy a year or two ago when I happened to be in town. Memorable times!
