KRIST, Pieter

April 28, 1932 – Hilversum, The Netherlands
May 28, 2018 – Airdrie, Alberta

Pieter Krist beloved husband of Ellen of Airdrie, passed away on May 28, 2018, at the age of 86 years.

Pieter was born in Hilversum to Oene Krist and Sophia Margaretha Helena Anna LeBelle, the youngest of 7 children.

Pieter is survived by his sons Christian, Peter, Johannes (Darlene), Edward, Allen and daughter Annie (Richard) Simon. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Pieter is fondly remembered by innumerable foster children and many friends. Family and friends each recall a special moment regarding his community involvement and love of sports, ballroom dance and a good dance party.

Pieter has been predeceased by his first wife Christine Ring, son Roelof (Marge), daughter-in-law Fiona, grandson William, great-grandson Maurice, his parents and siblings.

Pieter served in Koninklijke Landmacht as Sargent and weapons instructor, receiving an honourable discharge in 1953. After obtaining both his trade and business certificates Pieter found Canada offered more opportunities than post-war Holland.

Pieter and his family immigrated to Toronto in 1954.

After working with Underwood Typewriters the family moved to Prince Albert in 1964. There he formed and operated Unitech Office Equipment. Many businesses in northern Saskatchewan benefited from his exemplary technical skills.

Pieter and Christine provided a loving home for many foster children for seven years, including advocating with city, provincial and federal governments for changes in the Child Welfare Acts.

His community involvement was known thoughout Prince Albert. As was his involvement as President with both the Prince Albert Optimist and Oakville Optimist Clubs. Pieter was awarded the Optimist Golden Circle President’s Award for his contributions to club development.

In 1972 Pieter and Ellen married and moved to Calgary in 1981.

Again, community involvement is evident in his work as Social Chairman of the Dutch Canadian Club of Calgary, and he holds the record for the highest Mars in the Schopen Negen Klaverjas Club history.

As a child in occupied Amsterdam Pieter developed the ability to maintain a zest for life and to gather people. This continued throughout his life and is best reflected in the Optimist Creed:

Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Catholic Church (1305 Main Street Airdrie, AB) on Saturday, June 2 at 11:00 A.M.  Condolences may be forwarded through family especially thanks staff at Extendicare Hillcrest and Bethany Airdrie for their caring and support during Pieter’s final years. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your local charity which supports children in need.

In living memory of Pieter Krist , a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Airdrie, 300 TOWERLANE DRIVE, AIRDRIE, AB. Telephone: 403-948-1100.
