KOMERY, Lorna Agnes

b. Georgetown, British Guyana
d. Calgary, Alberta

Lorna Komery of Calgary passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019.

Lorna was born in Georgetown, British Guyana. As a young woman, she played field hockey, enjoyed walks in the botanical garden, gathering with her friends at the sea wall, and eventually working at Bookers sugar refinery as a secretary. After earning three months paid vacation, she booked a one-way ticket to Montreal, Canada where she initially lived with her aunt Genny (also her best friend), uncle Boysie and their kids, and worked at Shell in Personnel. This is where she met the love of her life, Douglas Komery. As fraternization was not allowed, when they decided to marry, Lorna resigned (much to the dismay of management!). They then moved to Calgary with their young kids, Christopher and Natasha. Lorna became a volunteer with Glenbow Museum and also became a 44 year member of the PEGG (Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists) Women’s Association, where she ultimately became President (2017-2018). Lorna otherwise stayed home to raise their kids until they were old enough to drive. Then, she became a successful realtor for almost ten years.

Lorna loved art, music, dancing. She loved her kids and her grandkids. She was an incredible cook and hostess. She loved to play mah-jong with her friends. She was a Scrabble whiz. She loved playing and listening to her daughter play the piano, seeing her son coach rugby, watching her grandson play basketball and her granddaughter dance. She awoke every day with a song in her head and sang throughout any given day. She loved her home of 45 years, especially sitting in the kitchen, watching the birds and squirrels out in the back yard and garden, or dancing in the kitchen with her husband. She will be most remembered for her beautiful smile, her compassion, her generosity, her class and grace, her positive attitude, her love of life, and her happy demeanor.

Besides her loving husband, Douglas, Lorna is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Chris and Tanya Komery; daughter Natasha Komery and her partner John Hiebert; two grandchildren Carson Komery and Hayden Komery; and her granddogs Lucy and Izzy. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Desmond and Lorna Singh; sister Teresa Coventry; sister and brother-in-law Joan and Daryl Embry; and sister and brother-in-law Jennifer and Ulrich Nowacki. Lorna is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends… all included in her radius of love.

Lorna was predeceased by her mother Rubina and father Alexander; two brothers, Neville Rego and Kenneth Rego; a sister Pat Huszar; and two dogs, Cognac and Molly.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, June 27, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Dear Doug, Tasha!
I’m so grateful I got to visit with you, as you so lovingly took care of Lorna in the hospital this past May. Even in her hospital bed she was so gracious and hospitable, offering us coffee or something to drink! She was such a role model and inspiration to the rest of the family and Mom, Muriel Leung, never tired of talking about her talents and accomplishments!
I will continue to remember her in our daily rosaries and masses, as she enters eternal life in Christ! May she rest in peace! Love, Prayers and Blessings, Elizabeth Victory, Cleburne, Texas
