KOKANAVA, Raissa (nee Ivanova)

October 4, 1939 – Surdy Village, Belynichski Area, Mogilev Region, Republic of Belarus
February 15, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Raissa Kokanava of Calgary, AB, passed away on February 15, 2018 at the age of 78 years at Calgary Foothills Hospital.

Raissa was born on October 4, 1939 in Mogilev Region of Belarus which at the time was a part of the former USSR and later became an independent country named the Republic of Belarus. She was a little girl when the Second World War started and Belarus was occupied. She lived through the challenging times when Belarus and former USSR were re-built after the war. Years later she witnessed all the transformations that followed including the former USSR ceasing its existence and all its former republics becoming independent countries. As a true Belarusian, she was a very humble person, pure and beautiful, very kind, loving, caring and possessed an amazing sense of humour. She moved to Canada to live with her daughter, Tatsiana, and son-in-law, Daniel, in 2009. She was the light and the love of the family and had a very special bond with her daughter, Tatsiana. They were inseparable. Two hearts beating as one, two trails that became one road. Raissa extended her motherly love to her son-in-law, Daniel, and always spoke of him fondly. If tears could build a stairway and heartache make a lane, we’d walk the path to heaven and bring you back again. We love you, Mama. Your heart will continue beating in our hearts forever.

Raissa is survived by, her daughter, Tatsiana Kokanava, her sister, Evdokiya Karpova and her son-in-law, Daniel Montgomery.

Raissa was predeceased by, her mother, Anastassiya Ivanova, her father, Pyotr Ivanov and her two brothers.

Relatives and friends were invited to All Night Prayers and Tributes at All Saints Russian Orthodox Church of All Saints (905 – 8th Avenue N.E., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 8:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at All Saints Russian Orthodox Church of All Saints (905 – 8th Avenue N.E., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Reception to follow at the McInnis and Holloway Chapel of Bells funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
