KNAPIK, Pauline

January 8, 1925 – Edmonton, Alberta
January 6, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Pauline passed away peacefully in her sleep at Providence Care Centre in Calgary, AB on Sunday, January 6, 2019; two days before her 94th birthday.

Pauline was the youngest of six children born to George and Marie McHugh of Edmonton and was orphaned as a preschooler. Pauline and her siblings were raised by her Aunt Nell Coady. While life wasn’t easy, she was able to start golfing at the age of 17 a past-time that she enjoyed for the rest of her life.

Pauline started her working career with the Gas Company in Edmonton. A 1959 move to Calgary in mid-career was a turning point in her life as she began a new job with Triad Oil. Her love of golf led to the love of her life as Dennis Knapik happened to be paired with her for a random round of golf. Dinner followed, and the rest “is history”. They were married in 1962, and lived life to the fullest from that point on.

Pauline always looked her best and continued a very active life with golf, personal fitness, frequent entertaining, and following her Calgary Stampeders and other sports figures. Motherhood introduced another change as Bernard and Mary Kathryn entered Pauline’s life and provided her a new purpose and direction which she thrived on to her dying day.
She will be missed by her children, Bernard and Kathryn (Paul) Rapheal; granddaughters, Gabriella, Isabelle, and Daniella Raphael; in-laws; nieces and nephews; her closest friends, Audrey McKean and Helen Trudel; the entire Beaton and Hemstock families; and the many other friends made at the Glencoe Club, Earl Grey Golf Club, St. James Catholic Parish, Manor Village at Garrison Woods, and the Providence Care Centre.

She was predeceased by her three brothers and two sisters, and in 2011, by Dennis.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Funeral Mass that will be celebrated at St. James Catholic Church (5504 – 20th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. A Reception will follow in the Parish Hall where memories can be shared and tall tales told. A Private Graveside Service will be held on a separate date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friend’s so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Developmental Disabilities Resource Centre of Calgary, 4631 Richardson Way SW, Calgary, AB T3E 7B8.

We all deeply appreciate the compassionate staff of the Providence Care Centre, Dr. Hantho, and Erin Bond and Theresa Fontain and the ladies of Best Buds Companion Care Ltd. who gave Pauline caring conversation and a helping hand through the last four years of her life.

In living memory of Pauline Knapik, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  4. I just got message of Pauline’s passing. She was such a Beautiful Lady inside and out. Now, she is with her parents, Aunt Nell, siblings, and of course her Love Dennis. Even though I did not spend much time with her due to living in California I have very fond memories of my Grandaunt.
