Loving Wife, Mother, Nana and caring friend to many, Elaine Kernahan passed away peacefully in Calgary on May 28, 2019.

Born in Provost, Alberta to Olinda and Bill (William) Wagner, Elaine was raised in Edmonton as the middle of 3 children. She graduated with a B.Sc. in Nursing from the University of Alberta in 1949, the same year she met and later married her husband Mart (Martin) Kernahan, a graduate engineer from Winnipeg. After their second daughter was born, the young couple moved to Calgary where they raised 6 children. Elaine was a wonderful wife, mother and home maker with a flair for baking. She loved gathering her grown children and their families around her dining table for special celebrations. Thrilled to have grandchildren, Elaine was an enthusiastic supporter of their numerous activities. The family has many happy memories of summer holidays at Pigeon Lake and skiing at Lake Louise. Elaine loved skiing, enjoyed cycling, dancing, jazz music, sewing, decoupage and playing bridge with friends.

Although devoted to family life, as her children became more independent Elaine also supported the wider community. Her 1991 nomination for the YWCA Women of Distinction Award in Community Service recognized Elaine’s involvement over many years with the CNIB, Salvation Army, Mentally Handicapped, Heart & Stroke, Cancer, Diabetes and other organizations. At Riverview United Church, Elaine led a youth group and served a term as UCW President. She officiated at track & field competitions, including the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. In the early 80’s Elaine re-qualified as an RN and worked at a Public Health clinic. She was an active member of the Samaritan Club of Calgary for almost 40 years, serving as Vice President and President.

Through Mart’s affiliation with the Canadian Olympic Association, the couple travelled the world. They also attended international Rotary conferences, enjoyed winter sailing trips in the Virgin Islands and, more recently, time on the beach in Nuevo Vallarta.

Predeceased by brother, Bill Wagner (Joanne), and devoted husband of 63 years, Mart, Elaine is survived by her sister, Dorcas Berry, her children Marilyn, Sheila Whitt (Michael), John, Lynda, Cameron (Terry) and Valerie Clark (Ed); grandchildren Chris (Meagan), Katy (Dan), Hillary (Robbie), Lauren, Hailey, Sydney, Claire, and Austin; and great-grandson Carter.

The family extends special thanks to the caring staff at Trinity Lodge and Amica Britannia, and the Foothills Hospital palliative care team. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation, in memory of Elaine, to the Samaritan Club of Calgary, 503-1500 14th St SW T3C 1C9. A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.
