KENNEDY, Martin Denis

June 19, 1947 – Ottawa, Ontario
May 28, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Martin (Marty) Denis Kennedy, beloved husband of Eileen Kennedy (nee O’Toole) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at the age of 71 years.

Marty was born in Ottawa, ON on June 19, 1947. He married Eileen on December 22, 1972 and moved to Calgary, AB in 1974. He attended the University of Calgary and studied business management. Marty worked for the federal government for twenty two years in the taxation department. After leaving the government, he became a school bus driver. He loved driving the kids to and from school every day and spending time with them. Before retiring, he moved up in the company and spent much of his time training new drivers. Marty had a passion for soccer. He coached both Michael and Christine through their childhood. He started Cascade Soccer Club with Michael, which he ran for many years. He also had a passion for motorcycles and began riding again in his sixties. He really enjoyed riding his Honda 750, and had great trips with his motorcycle buddies. Marty enjoyed travelling and spent time visiting the Isle of Man, France, China and Hawaii but his most memorable trip was a driving trip with Eileen along the west coast of BC and Oregon. Marty was always trying to be funny and make light of any situation. This continued until his final days, even though he was sick in the hospital he still tried his best to make a joke of his situation with the nurses and doctors.

Besides his loving wife Eileen, Marty is survived by his son Michael and his daughter Christine; and his four beautiful granddaughters, Brooklyn, Ella, Briar, and Brielle whom he loved dearly. Marty is also survived by his sister Maggie Pagotto, and his brother John Kennedy, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Wednesday June 19th 2019 from 2:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Marty Kennedy, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB, T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

    Eileen, Michael, Christine And Family,
We were saddened to hear of the loss of Marty.
We have such fond memories of him on trips out East, to Calgary and Lake Louise. He always joked around and got us organized when we set up our campsite.
Our trip with him to France was wonderful – one we will never forget. We knew when Marty was up, as he had coffee brewing and fresh croissants for everyone!
    Our sincere sympathy. God bless!

  14. Dermot O’ Toole

Dermot And Anne wish to extend their deepest sympathy to Eileen and her family following the sad loss of Marty.
We have many fond memories of him during his numerous visits to the Isle of Man. On one occasion in June, 2008 he and Eileen serviced Anne and I whilst competing in the annual 24-hour Parish Walk – a tiring 85-mile foot slog around the 17 parishes of the Isle of Man.
The weather that day was absolutely atrocious with wind, rain and hailstones hampering our progress. Though Marty thought we were quite mad in continuing , he and Eileen provided food and dry clothing throughout the day and night, and with their help, we managed to reach the finish in 22 hours. It was an occasion we will remember forever.
Well read, extremely knowledgeable and a warm personality, Marty will be missed by all but never forgotten.
    Treasured memories, Dermot and Anne.

Our memories of Marty are treasured forever. Thank you Marty for the many fun times like the weekly dancing lessons where you and I were the only two sweating buckets. You were so special at work at CRA and at play. Until we meet again, we will cherish our memories with you. Hugs to Eileen and family!

  18. My last memory of Marty was talking with him at a house (his parent’s place?) near Our Lady of Peace school in Etobicoke. It was about 1970, and I was home visiting from McMaster in Hamilton. I didn’t know Marty well, but as usual, he was funny, thoughtful, and generous.
From the condolences here, that’s the way Marty continued to live his life. Cheers to you Marty, and my condolences to your family.

    Eileen and family,
I have many fond memories of Marty as we worked together at CRA. He was always happy and willing to share his knowledge and stories.
I know that you all have great memories and stories as well. I send my love and prayers to help you through this time. Am very sorry for your loss. Michael and Christine, I enjoyed hearing about your lives as you grew up. Your dad always spoke very highly and also laughed from time to time about things around what you both were doing. He was very special in my life as a colleague and a friend. I remember fondly the one Christmas Team lunch when we invaded your kitchen and made coat hanger Christmas trees after eating at SAIT.
    Bless you all!

  26. Louise, John, Pippa and Heath

Dear Eileen, Mike, Christine, Scilla and granddaughters.

We were very sad to hear about Marty’s passing. He plays a big part in my childhood memories. I remember countless visits at Christmas, walks through the park with Lucy, Stampede, skiing (and the boot melting incident) to mention a few.

Marty was always ready with advise and had us all up and ready to go whatever we were doing. His laugh and smile were contagious and he was extremely generous with his time to show us around the sites of Calgary.

One lasting imagine, and one I will miss greatly in September, will be seeing him arrive at the airport in his cowboy hat! Every time I think of that airport I inevitably think of Marty and his hat.

Sending love, hugs and great memories to you all this week.

    Louise, John, Pippa and Heath

  28. Dear Mike, Christine and Eileen

I was so sad to hear about the passing of Marty. I have such fond memories of my childhood that involve him and all our countless trips to Calgary. I can remember skiing with Marty in the Rockies and him encouraging me to keep going when I wanted to give up and drink hot chocolate in the lodge! He was such a fun loving and helpful guy. He was always cheerful and ready to chat and exchange stories.

He will be greatly missed. Know that I am thinking of you during this difficult time.

    All my Love,

    Julia, D’Arcy and Douglas
