October 18, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Stella Annie Kennard (née Diaczyszyn) passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at the age of 86. Stella was born in Shackleton, SK, on June 15, 1932. She was the only child of Thomas and Matrona ‘Minnie’ Diaczyszyn, immigrants to Canada from the Western Ukraine. Stella moved with her family to Medicine Hat, AB, and graduated from Alexandra High School. She completed secretarial school and worked as a tele-typist for the Canadian Pacific Railroad.

Stella met her future husband Don Kennard in high school, and they were married on June 13, 1955. Stella was a happy mother of three girls- Kathy, Donna, and Susan. She was also active in the Medicine Hat Curling Club, and the community service Kinette Club of Canada. She enjoyed spending summers with her family at Elkwater Lake, AB.

In 1970, Stella moved with her family to Calgary and settled in Lake Bonavista. She developed new friends, joined a neighborhood bridge club, volunteered for the Catholic Women’s League at St Bonaventure Church, Calgary Meals on Wheels, and was the bookkeeper for her husband’s business at Bonavista Esso.

Most of all, Stella was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was very proud of her family and supported their many academic and extra-curricular ventures. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.

She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Kristine Sargeantson of Brooklyn, NY, Hallam, Charles, and Donald Cole MacKenzie of New York, NY, and Julie and Nicole Morter of Calgary, AB.

Stella is predeceased by her husband, Donald Percy Kennard.

  3. Maureen Khallad :

My mom always brightened up when Mrs Kennard visited her. They were both strong women and I remember my mom smuggling wine up to her room at Mckenzie and the two of them like teenagers giggling about their escapades. Mrs. Kennard called my mom her little butterfly and we are grateful for the times they enjoyed together. I know she will be missed by all.

  5. The Naylor family have known the Kennard family since 1963. Stella, Don and their kids were all our favourites over the years. We were neighbors in Medicine Hat, and Calgary and enjoyed fishing and other activities (including Esso conventions) over the years. Stella was a very special, fun loving person. She will always be lovingly remembered by all of us. We will miss her but never forget her. Condolences to all her loved ones.

  10. Stella,
Stella and Don became a little like parents for us two immigrants as we settled in Calgary.
It was always good to come to Stella’s house; food, laughs and stories galore.
Stella was uninhibited, direct, fresh and her sense of humour always in place.
We will remember her and Don always.
We hope they now have set up court in heaven and entertain the angels.
