KELLY, Katelyn Jane

May 3, 1984 – Calgary, Alberta
October 2, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Katie passed away peacefully surrounded by her beloved family on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at the age of 34 years.

Raised in Cochrane AB, Katie will be fondly remembered for her greatest gift, the capacity to show compassion and caring for those around her. With her out-going personality she was a well-known member of the community. Katie was an accomplished artist who loved to show her work. Katie’s beautiful soul found expression through her paintings and prints. Throughout her life Katie enjoyed engaging in conversation and socializing with everyone she met. Her inquisitive nature and genuine interest in others resulted in memorable exchanges, often leaving those she connected with in awe of her remarkable memory for detail. As an active member of All Saints Anglican Church, members of the congregation were made to feel special each Sunday as Katie greeted everyone by name. Fostering her love of books was demonstrated through her decade as a volunteer at the Cochrane Library. Katie loved to go bowling and attend other activities with friends through the Challengers Recreation Club. Most recently, she found great pleasure swimming in the warm water therapy pool. Katie’s presence enriched the lives of all who were privileged to know her.

Katie is survived by her parents, Gale and Robert Kelly; brother, Patrick; and sister-in-law, Ashley. Katie will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A Celebration of Katie’s Life will be held at the All Saints Anglican Church (404-4th Avenue North, Cochrane, AB) on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. All who have been touched by Katie are invited to attend.

I’m Free

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free,
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard His call,
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work, to play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I found that peace at close of the day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy,
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full, I savoured much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, He set me free.

If friends and family so desire, memorial donations can be sent to Muscular Dystrophy Canada through www.muscle.ca Condolences along with a favourite memory of Katie may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com

In living memory of Katie Kelly, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Cochrane, 369 RAILWAY STREET, COCHRANE, AB, T4C 2E2, Telephone: 403-932-4740.

Condolence Messages

  1. Dearest Gail, Bob and the rest of Katie’s loving family members…we deeply feel your sorrow with your loss of your dear Katie. While you knew and loved her best…some us tried too to help and understand her afflications while still recognizing the sweet girl within and most importantly; Katie’s talents and persistence to achieve whatever she was able to do. Her ‘Art Camp Coach’ batted up for her on many occasions for Katie to just be included like everyone else and she proved him right…she prevailed and produced some beautiful works of art…of which we are all proud! We will miss her…fondest regards, Bill and Tes Bewick

  12. Gale, Bob, Patrick and Ashley,
My thoughts and prayers are with you as you comes to terms with daily life without Katie. She will be missed by everyone with whom she came in contact, she was simpley unforgettable. It seemed like Katie was gratitude personified, she never forgot a person or the smallest gift anyone gave. I remember attending Katie’s art show and being struck not only by the amazing art work but by how happy Katie was to have a crowd around her, she greeted everyone and made us feel special just for attending. I had brought Katie a little glass bird with a rose in it, which for many people would have been a nice gesture, but for Katie she accepted it with such gratitude and heartwarming appreciation I was touched to the core. She just brought our hearts to the surface and made us feel grateful to be part of her circle of warmth. I think the Cochrane family was fortunate to be blessed with Katie for 34 years and she will be missed. My thoughts and prayers but also smiles at Katie’s honesty in correcting me that my real name was Kim, not Mrs. Penner, whenever she saw me around town. Heartwarming.

  39. Samira Jaffer, Art Department,UofC :

    Dear Bob & Mrs. Kelly,
I first met sweet Katie shortly after I started working in the Art Department University of Calgary with Professor Bob Kelly way back in 2003. Katie immediately found a place in my heart and she never left. I interacted with Katie whenever she visited the Department and worked in the studios making art during the summers. She would always ask how I was doing and over the years she never forgot me, even when she did not come into the office. Katie always, on a daily basis, asked her dad ‘how’s Samira doing today, what is Samira doing at work?’
I kept tabs on Katie via. her dad and I prayed for her well being & recovery but she did just fine all on her own for her inner strength, determination, her kindness and her soul, was at a much higher level than mine. I learnt much from sweet Katie and I will miss her Bob!
I now pray for your family’s strength to bear this tremendous loss but don’t grieve too much for too long Bob, let her beautiful pure soul journey now and soar to the heavens, for Katie surely has plans to reach great heights in the hereafter.
    My deep condolences and sympathy for your family Mrs. Kelly;

I came to know Katie at the Mount Royal University Bookstore when she came in on Fridays to collect our food bank donations. I can honestly say Katie’s visits were the highlight of my week. She was always asking about each of us, even staff members long retired; she challenged us with her questions and amazed us with her memory. We all miss her so much. I can only imagine the pain you feel at her loss, but I hope you will find some comfort in knowing that you gave the world a wonderful gift for 34 years.
