JULIUS, Rita Susan

August 15, 1948 – Montreal, Quebec
March 31, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Susan transitioned to the other side at 1:20 am on March 31 in Calgary, AB, coinciding with the first night of Jewish Passover.

Susan was born in Vancouver, BC to parents Ida Dobrinsky and George Sam Julius, following her brothers Bob, David, and Michael. When she was 5 years old, her family relocated to Montreal, QC, where Susan came of age. She studied psychology to the doctoral level and completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Ottawa in 1979. She then moved to Calgary to begin post-doctoral research at the Foothills Medical Centre, and transitioned from there to employment with the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Both of these supportive professional environments nurtured her burgeoning career as an esteemed child psychologist, which she maintained through private practice and an affiliation with the Calgary Board of Education until her retirement in 2013. Susan acted instrumentally in child custody cases, child intelligence testing, school-related and developmental issues, and trauma therapy.

During her time at the Foothills Medical Centre, Susan and Nicholas Rushton were introduced by mutual friends. They married in March 1986 and their two daughters soon followed: Chelsea Louise Rushton, then Stephanie Alison Rushton. Susan’s fierce independence and self-sufficiency, professional integrity, and deep compassion for others–especially children, animals (cats in particular), and those less fortunate than herself–infused her parenting style. She lived the examples of entrepreneurship, charitability, and kindness toward others that Chelsea and Stephanie have both matured into and embody in their own ways. Nothing made Susan more proud than their continuing personal and professional accomplishments.

Susan’s favourite pastimes were portrait photography, intellectual conversations, reading novels, and above all, playing bridge. Photography provided a creative outlet through which she documented her daughters’ development, and conversing and reading affirmed and expanded her understanding of the human psyche. The game of bridge was not only Susan’s passion; it was also a form of intellectual stimulation and challenge, and a means for her to connect with friends and build community. In university, Susan played kitchen bridge with classmates and colleagues, some of whom became lifelong friends. In Calgary, she joined the Calgary Duplicate Bridge Association, during which time she became a Ruby Life Master. She traveled to national and international tournaments in Penticton, BC, Las Vegas, NV, Gatlinburg, TN, Shelby, MT, and Puerto Vallarta, MX. Since 2015, Susan served the Association as their Event Photographer, a role that she took on with the conscientiousness and attention to detail that she brought to her career and her bridge game, and the personability and sensitivity that she showed in the relationships she had with her clients, close friends, and children.

Susan is survived by her brother Michael Julius; her separated husband Nicholas Rushton; her sister-in-law Lila Julius; her nieces and nephews in the Julius Clan; and by her daughters, Chelsea and Stephanie, who remember her with love, appreciation, and admiration.

A celebration of Susan’s life will be hosted for family, friends, and those whose lives Susan touched on Friday, April 20, 2018. Please contact Chelsea at chelshotel@gmail.com for more information. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

  9. Betty Reiter :

    Dear Chelsea and Stephanie,
I’m so very sorry to learn about Susan’s passing. I was a colleague of Susan’s at the Calgary Board of Education for many years. I have very fond memories of her. She was a compassionate and talented psychologist who always wanted to go that extra mile to ensure that she provided the best possible support to the students she worked with. After Susan retired from the CBE, I had the good fortune of bumping into her several times. She often mentioned how much she was enjoying her leisure time (spending quality time with her daughters and playing a lot of Bridge!).
    With my sincerest condolences,
    Betty
