JONES, Sarah Morfudd

September 19, 1927 – Aberystwyth,Wales, UK
December 9, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Sarah Morfudd Jones SRN, SCM passed away peacefully at Chinook Care Centre in Calgary on Sunday, December 9, 2018. Her bright smile and desire to help people brought light into the lives of her many friends and family.

Sarah was born September 19th 1927, the youngest daughter of Richard Llewelyn Jones MBE, JP and Jane Ann Jones of Nantydderwen, Llanilar, Wales, U.K and was one of eleven children. After attending School in the village of Llanilar, Sarah started her nursing career in 1948 at North Road Hospital in Aberystwyth and continued her nursing training at Llandough Hospital near Cardiff before going to Marston Green in Birmingham to complete her Midwifery training.

Encouraged by her aunt who had emigrated to Canada, she was recruited with 2 friends to come to Canada in 1962, as British midwifery skills were greatly valued here. This started an adventure that lasted a lifetime. She initially worked in Hamilton, Ontario which gave her the opportunity to visit her relations in Montreal and was the first family member to visit from Wales.

After a camping trip across Canada to visit her far-flung relatives, she started the next stage of her adventures by moving to La Ronge, a remote village in Northern Saskatchewan where in winter she often had to take a bush plane to deliver babies on the First Nations reserves. This experience whetted her appetite for travel and adventure which she continued to the very end. After a brief sojourn back to the nurse in Chester, she realized that she belonged in Canada and in 1966 returned to nurse in Red Deer and then moved to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary and then on to the new Peter Lougheed Hospital Obstetrics department.

Shortly after moving to Calgary in 1967, Sarah joined the Calgary Welsh Society and there she met the love of her life, a fellow Welshman, William Gretton Jones, who was on the faculty of Aeronautical Engineering at SAIT. They found that in addition to their Welsh love of singing, they both enjoyed skiing and the great outdoors and he introduced her to the game of golf, which became another passion in her life.

Sarah and Bill returned to Wales to be married in Llanilar on 31 July 1971. They returned to live in Calgary where they remained and enjoyed life to the full, especially playing golf as members at Canyon Meadows Golf Club and devoting much time to their beloved Welsh Pembrokeshire Corgis.

Sarah retired from her nursing career in 1992, which had been her passion for over 40 years, especially the delivery and caring for many hundreds of babies. Bill retired soon after and they played even more golf and travelled extensively, going on many cruises around Latin American, Europe and Asia as well as spending time at their condo in Whitefish, Montana.

In September 2002 Bill’s journey in life came to an end. Morfudd continued to live life to the full and was a committed supporter of Christ Church Elbow Park as a member of the Alter Guild, Prayer Shawl Group and the Nativity events. She was an active member of the Calgary Welsh Society for over 50 years and of course she continued to golf and travel the world. Her last big trip was in July 2017, when she returned to Wales to celebrate her 90th Birthday.

Sarah was also predeceased by her parents and nine of her siblings and is now survived by her only brother Morgan Hefin Jones in Aberystwyth, and many nieces and nephews in the UK and Canada including Gail Evans, Wendy Hanson, David Hanson, Rick Hanson and their families in Calgary.

We would like to thank the nursing and care staff and Dr Shankel at Chinook Care for providing very caring support in her last few months as well as good friends Glynis and Kel Maguire for their on-going support during the last year.

Funeral Services will be held at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 – 8th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, January 11, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Crump room at the church. In lieu of flowers please make donation to Christ Church Elbow Park, Condolences may be forwarded through

Condolence Messages

  1. I got to know Sarah through my late mother, Margaret Angyalfi, who worked with Sarah for many years in the labour and delivery unit of the General Hospital. My mother considered Sarah to be a dear friend and lovingly referred to her as “Jonesy.” I too have many happy memories of Sarah from the times when my mothers friends gathered together. She was always so kind and always asked about myself and my brother. After my mother passed away a dozen years ago, Sarah and I continued to exchange Christmas cards. I will certainly miss hearing of news from her. Condolences to all the family and may Sarah, a sweet soul, rest in peace.

  2. To Morfudd’s Family:
May I extend my deepest condolences in the loss of dear Morfudd. I share in the grief at her passing and in the joy of honouring and celebrating her life. I was introduced to Morfudd at Christ Church Elbow Park when I commenced research for my thesis on Welsh Music in Alberta. Morfudd was my first ‘informant’ and so gladly shared her experiences and knowledge with me. I shall be forever grateful to Morfudd for her generous encouragement and enthusiasm, attending many Calgary Welsh Society events together, and for our friendship that continued on after my return to Ontario. Thank you for sharing your beloved Morfudd. She will be greatly missed.
With sincere sympathy and forever-cherished memories,
    Susan Drayson
Former member of Christ Church Elbow Park and The Calgary Welsh Society

  3. Hello family and friends, My wife, Paulette, and all of our family extend our most sincere condolences on the passing of our dear Morfudd. We give thanks to our Lord for the opportunity of having had her as part of our lives. Her genuinely warm smile and hearty laugh enriched our hearts and made the world a better place. I remember her strength and independent determination as she apparently shepherded her heavy luggage at London’s Heathrow Airport last year before been whisked away for her 90th birthday party in Aberystwyth. It was a most joyous and memorable celebration. We will meet again. Kindly, Tom

  4. I am very saddened at the passing of Sarah. I met her in 1978 at the Calgary General Hospital and we worked together until she retired. She was joyful, loved parties and always made Welsh cakes, and her corgis. I last saw her in September when several of us went to visit her and we laughed and laughed until she declared it was just like old times. She will be missed.

  5. Upon Morfudd’s recent passing my wife and I offer our sincere sympathies to her relatives here in Canada and to those in the United Kingdom.
We knew Morfudd over a long time and had become good friends! I first met her and her husband Bill when I arrived in Calgary in the autumn of 1976. While reading the Calgary herald in my hotel room one day I was surprised to see and advertisement for a Calgary Welsh Society social function that was to be held at a south-west Calgary address.
Our friendship started from the very day I attended that Welsh social event held at Morfudd and Bill’s Calgary home. The friendship grew stronger over the course of many years and, despite husband Bill’s passing some 16 years ago, it continued and we were able to enjoy her company and hospitality on so many occasions!
Betty and I will certainly miss that friendship – as well the Calgary Welsh Society in which she had been honoured with Life Membership!
    Cofion cyness, Morfudd!
