Johnstone, Andrew Daniel (Danny)

June 17, 1934 – Calgary, Alberta
August 2, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that the family of Andrew Johnstone announces his passing on August 2, 2018.

He courageously battled cancer for several years with the inner strength we all knew he had. Affectionately known as “Danny” to his family and friends, he was born on June 17, 1934 in Calgary. Danny was a rare native Calgarian who loved all things Calgary including the Stampede, Bowness Park, Happy Valley, and the “Oil Patch”, to name a few. His early youth was spent growing up on a family farm in SW Calgary where Mount Royal University now stands. After the farm was sold he spent most of his teen years in the Tuxedo area and attended Western Canada High School where he played Basketball, Football, and Hockey. After high school he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and spent a few years proudly serving when his service brought him to Melville, Saskatchewan, and he met his future wife Eveline. They married in October of 1956 and started their life in Swift Current. Danny and Ev moved back to Calgary in 1958 where they started a family and it was at this point when Danny began his long career working in the oil industry. He started with Tubescope as a field scout and then worked with Atlantic Richfield for a number of years before Petro-Canada took them over. During his career, Danny served as president for both the Canadian Oil Scouts Association and the International Oil Scouts Association. Upon retirement from Petro-Can he worked on contract with Mobil Oil for 10 years before fully retiring in 1999. Danny and Ev spent their retirement years travelling and spending time at their cabin in the Okanagan.

Danny is survived by his sons Kevin (Wendy), Trevor (Darcy), Rick (Cori); Daughter Alanna (Ron), his grandchildren Alleah (Emily), Kala (Justin), Tyler (Ashley), Conner, Mitchell, Spencer (Courtney), Victoria, Jake, Lindsay, Erik, Callie, and one great-grandchild, Hudson. Also left to mourn are numerous nieces and nephews.

Danny was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Eveline, his parents Andrew and Janet Johnstone, sisters Mary and Grace, and brother Johnny.

To Danny’s family, my sincere sympathies on your loss. I often referred to Danny as my ‘work dad’, as he always had sound advice and was a good listener with a great sense of humour. We had a lot of fun working together as oil scouts and I learned a great deal from him. He will be missed.
