September 6, 1949 – Calgary, Alberta
August 21, 2019 – Airdrie, Alberta
Thomas (Tom) Robert Johnston beloved husband, father, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully in his Airdrie home on August 21, 2019 at 69 years of age. Tom shared a rich and fulfilling life with his wife, Marlene (Duque) Johnston, celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary earlier this year. In addition to being a loving and adoring husband, Tom was a proud father to his son, James, and daughter, Sharlene. Tom’s love and affection was also felt by extended family, friends, colleagues, and neighbours.
Professionally, Tom started his career on March 4, 1971 as a fabricator and welder (Carman) with CP Rail. He left in August 1978 before moving West to work for BC Rail in Squamish, British Columbia. Tom was well liked and respected in his field where he was employed from September 21, 1978 until the sale of BC Rail to CN Rail in November 2004. He chose to take an early retirement to enjoy time with his family and hobbies. Time with family was highlighted by vacations and embracing his later roles as chauffeur, mover, mechanic, homemaker, butler, and meticulous dish washer. Tom enjoyed time spent watching his son play sports, especially hockey. He also relished moments listening to his daughter play guitar and piano. As a motorcycle enthusiast, Tom loved working on and riding his motorcycle; often reminiscing about his trip across Canada and regular excursions to the West Coast to visit family and friends. He sustained this interest as a member of The Alberta Airheads Motorcycle Club.
Tom is survived by his wife, Marlene, and children, James and Sharlene; niece, Catherine (Paul Kent), nephew, Stephen (Shelley Brooks) and generations of cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by lifelong friends Bob Oriold, Leonard Lewin, John Wallebeck, Victor Scheepe, and other close friends. Tom was predeceased by his father James; mother Opal; sisters, Barbara and Dorothy.
Tom will be remembered for his kindness, patience, humour, and devotion to those he loved. These qualities are clearly captured through his efforts researching and documenting our family tree.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Catholic Church (1305 Main Street Airdrie, AB) on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the Church Hall. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
