JOHNSON, Shirley Clayton

August 26, 1928 – Eston, Saskatchewan
April 17, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Shirley Clayton Johnson, beloved husband of Doreen Johnson (nee Germsheid) of Calgary, AB passed away on April 17, 2019 at the age of 90 years.

Shirley was born on the family farm near Eston, Saskatchewan on August 26, 1928. He attended the local one room school until high school when he moved to Eston. Upon graduation from high school he would work at various jobs in BC and Alberta only to return to the farm in the spring. This allowed him to play and manage the Eston Ramblers baseball club for a few years. Farming and baseball would remain life long passions. He would often spend his vacation assisting on one of the family farms with harvest, trading long days in the office for long days in the field.

In 1949 Shirley moved to Alberta starting a career with Transalta’s predecessor Calgary Power. His forty year career with Transalta, most of it as a surface rights landman, which took him around the province forming lifelong relationships. None were more special than the “Super 8” – who celebrated an annual golf trip for over forty years.

Like so many of his generation, he was a builder in business and in the community. Shirley generously gave his time to the local community associations of Lynnwood in Edmonton and Triwood in Calgary. He coached Little League baseball for over thirty-five years and then donated his time to the development of the senior’s slo-pitch league where he played until he was 85. Shirley was actively involved with the International Right of Way Association and was a local chapter President. He believed in professional standards for all landmen and assisted in the development of the curriculum at Olds College’s Surface Land Agent program.

Besides his loving wife of sixty-five years Doreen, Shirley is survived by his five sons Dale (Pat), Bob (Suzy), Don, Greg (Angie) and Sandy (Marlene). He was also blessed with ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Shirley is also survived by brothers Vic (Kaye) in Ottawa and Gary (Lois) in Eston, and his sister-in-law Maimae in Ottawa. Shirley was predeceased by his son Perry and his brother Ken.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot Chapel, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary AB) on Friday, April 26, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. 10. The Johnson Family in Ottawa

The Johnson Family in Ottawa wants to express our deep sorrow at Shirley’s passing.

We always enjoyed our visits with him over the years, and really enjoyed his sense of humour.

Many times over the years when any of our family members were in Calgary or just passing through, Shirley and Doreen always made us feel very welcome in their home.

We’re very sure if there isn’t a golf course or ball diamond in heaven when Shirley gets there, he’ll make sure that they will be built.

    We will miss you Shirl.

    Vic and Kaye Johnson

  12. To the Johnson family: Our prayers are with you over the passing of Shirley, or Coach Johnson as he was always known to me. Coach Johnson was my first Little League coach in Edmonton and I will always remember him as a kind and passionate leader on the field. We could feel how much Coach Johnson cared for us as players and as kids. Whenever I came in contact with Coach Johnson over the years I was always greeted with a warm smile and handshake and he was interested in my life and family. Thank you Coach Johnson- for all that you gave us, we always wanted to make you proud of us.

We were so sorry to hear this news. I didn’t get to see Uncle Shirley and Aunt Doreen often over the years but we did get to see them in 2015 when we were in Saskatchewan at the family farm. My dad was always very fond of his big brother and they shared passion for golf and baseball. Our sincere condolences from Ottawa
