JOHNSON, Shirley Ann (nee Hilland)

JOHNSON, Shirley Ann (nee Hilland)
August 19, 1935 – Camrose, AB
May 12, 2016 – Calgary, AB

Shirley Ann Johnson, of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at the age of 80 years.

Shirley, the beloved wife of Raymond Johnson, for nearly fifty-seven years was the ultimate mother and grandmother anyone could ever ask for. Growing up a farm girl and used to hard work, Shirley would accomplish more in a morning than many people could in a week. Whatever task lay before her she tackled with enthusiasm and her very best effort. She was an excellent cook and baker, and provided a warm and inviting kitchen that was always filled with cakes, cookies, squares and her specialty; Norwegian baking. Shirley loved going for walks with her husband and their much loved dog, Higgins. She was a long-time member of the Sons of Norway, the Calgary Scandinavian Centre, and in earlier years, the Dots and Dashers square dance club. Shirley and Raymond were blessed to spend many years “snowbirding” in Florence, Arizona, and also enjoyed their cabin in Sicamous, B.C. for over thirty years. There were also road trips across Canada and Alaska, trips to Norway, and in later years cruises. But ultimately, Shirley found herself most happy enjoying the simple things, enjoying time with family and friends, and cherishing every moment.

Shirley is survived by her husband Raymond; Children Bonnie (Bill Erickson), Darren, and Blair (Mary Lynne); Grandsons Anders, Olin and Trygg; Step-granddaughters Christina and Heather; Brother Wayne Hilland; Sisters-In-Law Joyce Hilland, Margaret Selvig and Doris Turner; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents Emma and Herman; and brothers Gordon and Allan.

The family of Shirley Johnson would like to express sincere appreciation to the nursing, medical, and allied health staff on unit 47 at the Foothills Medical Centre, as well as heartfelt thank you to the outstanding team at the Sarcee Hospice. Your compassionate and professional care for Shirley was deeply appreciated.

If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Forzani and MacPhail Colon Cancer Screening Centre. Donations can be made by telephone (403) 815-9838 or online at: Donations may also be made to the Hope Lutheran Church in Calgary (3527 Boulton Road N.W.).

I’m so sorry to hear the news of our dear neighbour’s passing.

It’s funny how you take things for granted and always expect that when I visit my parents, that Mr and Mrs Johnson will always be next door.

I can still hear Mrs Johnson’s voice and see her smile. She has left a lasting memory in my life. With such soft subtleties, that I hadn’t realized until today how much of an impact she had on me. A remarkably kind, gentle and loving woman.

Little things have been sliding out of my memories to the foreground since I read my sister’s text. Moments of us kids in the neighbourhood, while we were growing up. Raiding the gardens. Raspberry bushes. Building sand castles. The ice rink in the Johnson’s backyard. Trying to make friends with Tiger. Sitting in the cool space between our 2 houses on a hot day. My mother sending me to the Johnson’s to give or get a cup of sugar. The wonderful baked treats we’d get in return a little while after I took the sugar over. The taste of my first Pop-Tart in the Johnson’s kitchen. Climbing the tree in my parent’s backyard and daring each other to eat the choke cherries. The same choke cherries that Mrs Johnson had turned into jam. I remember being stunned that those ikky cherries from the tree could be made into something so deliciously edible. For Halloween, the best ever popcorn ball! I remember Mrs Johnson putting it in my pillow case bag. She’d made it herself.

I cry and smile as each moment gently moves by in my mind. So many many moments. I’m ever so grateful for them.

I have lit a candle in memory of Mrs Johnson. The fire burns brightly in its quiet, gentle way as if it carries her essence.

My heart goes out to Mr Johnson, Bonnie, Darren, Blair, cousin Barbara and family.
Mrs Shirley Johnson, a very dear Lady.

    To the Johnson family,
Shirley was really one in a million. She will be missed and remembered by all who knew her. Shirley was a perfectionist and definitely a multi tasker.

Shirley was friendly and kind and always had time for everyone. Shirley made everyone feel special.

Dear Ray, Bonnie, Darren, Blair, and families,
We are so sorry for your loss, and our thoughts are with you as they have been these past months. Although Shirley was my dad’s cousin, she was only ten years older than me, so she was still living at home with Herman and Emma and Wayne when I was a little girl on the farm at Gladstone. Visits to their house were so much fun, because Shirley and Wayne would play with us. Shirley was already a great baker and always encouraged us to “help” her, despite the mess she had to clean up after our assistance. She and Ray and Bonnie came to our wedding in Wainwright, and she and Ray always made us welcome at their home in Calgary whenever we were in the area, sharing family stories, knowledge of the Norwegian language and customs, and of course, her baking. We both have fond memories of Shirley.

    Ray and Family,
So sorry that I was unable to attend the services for Shirley. I met her in the 90,s while rolling lefse at the Scan Centre. She was indeed a great cook and I learned a lot from her. I’ll remember her for her kindness, her excellent rolling ability and the only one that could make cake doughnuts like my Mother’s. I’ll miss her at SON. May she rest in peace.
