August 26, 1931 – December 31, 2016
John Johnsen passed away in Calgary on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at the age of 85 years.
John was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on August 26, 1931. He was predeceased by his parents, Karen Brink and Ejner Johnsen. John is survived by his children Jamie Johnsen of Canmore and Debbie Johnsen of Toronto; his sister Gerda Malmkjaer and family in Copenhagen, Denmark; companion of 22 years Jan Herman; Jan’s children Todd Herman and Wendy Bachman, grandchildren Alex, Seth and Autumn.
He had fond memories of summers at his uncle’s farm in Jutland. At 14, he became an apprentice mechanic and went on to work for both Ford and General Motors in Denmark. He was proud to become a foreman at a young age. His life long passion began at age 5 when his mother insisted that he learn to dance. He resisted but went to lessons for many years, and finally began to like it, or maybe it was the girls that held his interest. He won many dance competitions and was Captain of the Danish Dance Team. He became the European Jitterbug Championship and did night club tours all over Europe. Dance and good music remained a major part of his life forever. In 1956 his cousin in Calgary sent a newspaper article offering to trade a bike for a car. John decided he needed to go to such a place and immigrated to Canada in 1957. John taught dance for Arthur Murray in Calgary and then opened his own studio. He even had a TV show for awhile. He worked as a commodities broker for many years and retired from Nesbitt Burns. John loved playing badminton, tennis and in his later years, pickle ball. He enjoyed watching hockey and football and played bridge frequently. John hated being cold and loved escaping to Hawaii and Arizona in the winter.
