JOFFE, Mona

August 13, 1931 – Winnipeg, Manitoba

May 10, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, Mona Joffe, who passed away on Friday, May 10th after a heroic battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. She faced this disease with remarkable courage and dignity.

Mona was born on August 13th, 1931 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and grew up in a close-knit family in Eastend, Saskatchewan. She graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1952 with a BSc in Laboratory Technology. After her father passed away, Mona moved with her mother and brother to Calgary. She worked at the Calgary General Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital and, in later years, at the Elbow Drive Clinic, where she made life-long friends.

Mona married Cyril Joffe in Calgary in 1958. They celebrated fifty-five happy years together until Cy’s death in 2014. She was also predeceased by her parents Abe (1953) and Pearl (née Naimark, 1986) Robins.

Mona will be deeply missed by her four children, Risha, Ari (Deanna), Joan and Ken; grandchildren Rachel, Jacob, Talia, Isaac, Eva and Misha; devoted brother Murray Robins; and many special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. We sincerely thank Mona’s healthcare providers and compassionate caregivers for helping her stay comfortably at home over many years. She was cared for in her last few days at Chinook Hospice. Special thanks to Brella Claudio, Mona’s live-in caregiver and companion.

Funeral service will take place at Temple B’nai Tikvah (900 47th Ave SW, Calgary) on Monday, May 13th at 1:00 p.m., with burial to follow at the Erlton Jewish Cemetery (Erlton Street and 32nd Avenue SW).  Arrangements in care of the CHEVRA KADISHA OF CALGARY, Telephone:  403-244-4717. Condolences may be forwarded through In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jewish Family Service of Calgary or to a charity of your choice.

    To the whole Joffe family,
Mona showed me such kindness when I was a child. I will always remember sitting at the kitchen table in her home, eating wonderful food, listening to someone play the piano as Pepe, the cute little dog, ran around the room. She was a generous, caring person and I know she is greatly loved and will be missed.

Mona was such a wonderful human being and I was proud to have known her for almost 60 years. I never knew her to have an unkind word about anyone. When she was afflicted with Parkinson’s she never complained and I know that she missed Cy terribly.
I know that you all, Risha, Joan, Ari & Ken, are left with wonderful memories of your Mom. May she rest in peace. With heartfelt sympathy to you all. Doris Fishman
