JESPERSEN, Kerry Grant

October 31, 1962 – Edmonton, Alberta
November 17, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

Kerry Grant Jespersen passed away on November 17, 2015 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 53 years.

Kerry was born October 31, 1962 in Edmonton to Elmer and Shirley Jespersen and spent the first few years of his life living in Onoway, Alberta. Kerry was by nature a loving, vibrant and generous person who was known to have surprised many unsuspecting individuals with a practical joke. He once glued a classmate’s gym shoes to the gym floor and was known to have entertained his friends in his 280Z with car stunts around Fox Creek.

Kerry’s greatest joy in life was his two sons Jesse Taron and Micah Taylor. He loved his boys beyond words and that love was shared in the many adventures they had together…hiking, fishing and taking trips abroad. Kerry’s true passion was his practice. He found the greatest comfort and accomplishment in being able to help a person in need. He loved his work and he sincerely desired to help others. Kerry had many friends and colleagues that shared much with him over the years and he cherished his relationship with them. He truly touched the hearts of many people with his soft spoken compassion and authentic presence. Kerry’s love of the outdoors is captured in the many photos, from his trips to Cuba, Mexico & Peru as well as his favorite walk along the Elbow River close to his home.

Kerry is survived by his two sons, Jesse Taron and Micah Taylor; his father Elmer Jespersen and his siblings Kim Jespersen (wife Deb), Sheryl de Leeuw (husband Earl), Melodie Aspin (husband Derek), and Cindy Martens (husband Darcy). His nieces and nephews: Nathan and Jared Jespersen, Lauren Wilson (husband Jared), Daign and Arynn de Leeuw, Janelle, Nicole and Aiden Aspin, Evan and Hayley Martens also survive him. Kerry was predeceased by his mother Shirley Jespersen.

A Celebration of Kerry’s Life will be held in the Chapel at Centre Street Church “Central Campus” (3900 – 2nd Street N.E.) on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a trust fund set up by Friends Church with the following link: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/in-loving-memory-of-kerry-grant-jespersen/

In living memory of Kerry Jespersen, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: 403-241-0044.

My sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of my counsellor and friend Kerry.

I was honoured to have known him for almost 5 years after first meeting him in early 2011. He had such a kind and gentle demeanour and it was that personality that had helped me through some dark places and times. He was good and decent soul and the world is far less of a place without him in it.
I miss my friend so very much.

  8. I only learned of Kerry’s passing yesterday and to say I am sad would be a large understatement. In the five plus years since I first met Kerry, he has shown me how to love and forgive myself and to appreciate all that world has to offer. Most importantly he taught me that it is not a sin to seek a higher level of happiness in life. I will miss our talks and time together deeply. As my journey towards achieving true happiness continues on, I will remember his guidance and words of encouragement along the way. Thank you Kerry.

  9. I am deeply saddened that Kerry is no longer with us. He was a good friend and have enjoyed our coffee’s every month. We journeyed through seminary together and then rekindled our friendship some 20 year’s later. A man that had an exceptional gift to listen, a big heart to love, an exceptional gift to be non-judgemental. A exceptional father and an exceptional friend. He had been a ray of hope in my own life in the past year as he inspired me to fulfill my dream of being a therapist… letting go of the past and seeing the hope that lies ahead. He has been a ray of hope to thousands of others and I was one of those he hoped for. I will miss Kerry…your loss has not gone unnoticed.

  10. On Death
    Kahlil Gibran

You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?
The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.
If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

    In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;
And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring.
Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.
Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour.
Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king?
Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling?

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

So go dance, my Lifetime Friend!

  14. I am so shocked and saddened. I just tried to contact Kerry and found out about his passing. I had met Kerry 2 years ago through his practice. Kerry was kind, warm, humorous, compassionate and ‘real’. I don’t have a need for many friends and didn’t really think about Kerry that way. But right now, given the sadness that I feel, he had found a place in my heart and was someone I would call a friend.

To his family, I wish you strength and hope you treasured the person Kerry was. We will all miss him, may he rest in peace.

  15. In 2015 I had the privilege of acting as professional supervisor to Kerry for several months while he was refining his therapy skills. It didn’t take long for me to see that he didn’t need much guidance or input from me! He was a therapy natural. He had amazing insight into others, deep caring and warmth for his clients and had a creative energy he used to help promote change. I have now lost a colleague, friend and resource. His children should be very proud of their dad, he gave a lot to this world during his all to brief stay.

Warren and I just learned of Kerry’s passing today when I tried to call him to give him a reference for councelling. We are both so saddened to hear of Kerry’s passing. He has been our guiding light through the past 5 years and was the most caring and gental soul. He was exceptionally great at understanding and listening to others and had a very instinctive approach to his counseling. Our lives have been forever changed because of you Kerry….we will miss you very much. To Kerry’s children we are so sorry for your huge loss.

  20. I have been thinking of you my Best Buddy, to learn that this is what I will see in my search is absolutely devastating. I had been wondering since our last meet up which I believe was last November where we shared a couple of pints and a wonderful stories and plans to have many more of those happy times together is making me feel very sad. I never met your boys but you always told me stories of how proud you are for having wonderful and kind hearted young men just like you are. My deepest condolences goes to them and to all your family and great friends. I’m really sorry to see you go, God Bless you my friend.

  21. I would like to dedicate this song to my good friend Kerry. This song meant a lot to me, sang by Steven Curtis Chapman. I hope you are listening.

    “With Hope”
    This is not at all
How we thought it was supposed to be
We had so many plans for you
    We has so many dreams
    But now you’ve gone away
And left us with the memories of your smile
    And nothing we can say
    And nothing we can do
    Can take away the pain
    The pain of losing you

And we can cry with hope
We can say good-bye with hope
‘Cause we know our good-bye is not the end
And we can grieve with hope
    ‘Cause we believe with hope
There’s a place where we’ll see your face again
    We’ll see your face again

    And never have I known
    Anything so hard to understand
And never have I questioned more
    The wisdom of God’s plan
But through the cloud of tears
I see the Father smile and say ‘well done.’
    And I imagine you
Where you wanted most to be
Seeing all your dreams come true
    ‘Cause now you’re home
    And now you’re free

    [Chorus]

We have this hope as an anchor
    ‘Cause we believe that everything
    God promised us is true

    [Chorus]

    We wait with hope
    And we ache with hope
    We hold on with hope
    We let go with hope

  24. I am shocked and saddened to learn of Kerry’s passing. I only saw Kerry a handful of times but he helped me more than I can express. He was gentle and kind spirited and his genuine desire to help others was evident the moment my partner and I met him. I have met few who have the ability to empathize like Kerry. I only learned of his passing when trying to refer someone for his counselling services. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

  28. A sincere message from my heart.
To the surviving family and friends of Dr. Kerry J……..
I am just now learning of his passing on. I was trying to locate him to see him again for a follow up, so this news has put me into shock. My wife and I came to Kerry during the darkest and most difficult days of our relationship. His warm smile and caring heart were both welcoming and comforting. Through several sessions Kerry helped us see what led to our mistakes as well as gave us the tools to work on it together. Now, 2 years later our relationship has healed and grown so strong. Kerry gave us the greatest gift on Earth….the opportunity for us to heal and stay together. He was a kind man with so much heart, divine wisdom, and so approachable. This news has saddened our hearts and we offer our condolences to all of you. We will never ever forget the help he gave us, and will continue to strengthen our bond using his techniques and teachings. Now not only for us and our relationship, but also as a lasting tribute, eternally thanking him for the amazing help he gave us. A truly wonderful man in every way, who made an unforgettable positive impact in our lives. We will never forget, and will always honor his memory.

    Dear Jespersen Family,
It’s with a heavy heart that I write this note. Kerry was my therapist for a while, and I’ve thought of him often since moving away from Calgary. You’re all so fortunate to have had Kerry in your family. I knew him only professionally, and liked him enormously. Kerry helped put my head back on straight. He was the guiding light for recovering my good mental health. His capacity to offer the right words, and to care in the way I truly needed at the time was a blessing in my life. I speak of Kerry from time to time, and use my positive experience with him to encourage others to seek counselling to help cope. I trust this is just a small part of Kerry’s legacy. My heartfelt condolences to the people who knew and loved him. He’ll forever have a place in my heart.
