JENSEN, Margaret Fidelma (Dell)

January 6, 1934 – Bunnamucka, Co. Roscommon, Eire
May 29, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Born in 1934 in Bunnamucka, County Roscommon, Eire to parents John and Mary (“Mai”) Shiel, Margaret Fidelma (“Dell”) Jensen passed away on May 29, 2019. Dell immigrated to Canada as a young girl in 1950 on the ocean liner Empress of Canada.

Dell embraced her new home and lived in several Canadian provinces, but Alberta captured her heart. After working and teaching in the hospitality industry for decades and after her own children had grown, Dell went on to care for others’ children with a gentle guiding hand. She was a resident of the community of Midnapore in Calgary for 39 years.

Dell was an avid reader and CBC radio listener, who was intensely curious about all aspects of the world. She had an adventurous streak, whether that was riding a camel in Egypt in the 1960s or white water rafting at age 70. Dell was also willing to occasionally ignore rules (such as where to pick grapes or berries), to the delight and chagrin of her family.

Dell had a keen interest in nature and tried to encourage that passion in her family and friends. Visitors were often guided through her beloved Fish Creek Provincial Park and the mountains of Kananaskis Country. The success of any road trip was measured by the number of wildlife which the group had sighted that day, from the smallest pica to a large mother moose and offspring. Only banana slugs received disdain.

Dell saw beauty and honour in small things and small gestures. She was a genuine friend to many people over the years, taking the time to listen to troubles, and keep their confidences close-held. She believed in tolerance and acceptance wherever possible.

Though her health was declining over the past few years, Dell maintained her independence, living on her own with the support of family and the kindness of neighbours. She asked that everyone in the extended family and group of friends know how much she loved each of you.

Dell is survived by and will be sadly missed by her children with their spouses and partners: Charmaine Spencer (Jim Hawkey) of Vancouver, British Columbia; Alan Jensen (Glenda Hanson) of Regina, Saskatchewan; Maureen Jensen of Calgary, Alberta; Lorraine Copland of Zoetermeer, the Netherlands; and Elaine and Steve.

She is survived by her grandchildren (Aaron, Jared, Aidan, Sydney, Liam, and Sasha) and three great-grandchildren (Elijah, Sam and Pippa), each of whom she deeply cherished, as well as by her brother Peter Shiel and sister Bridget Cavanagh, many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Canada, Ireland, England, and Australia. Dell was predeceased by her daughter Katherine Eileen Rouse, as well as her siblings, Mary (“Mamie”), Tom, Rosaleen, Eithne, Angela, Sean, and Pauline.

Please think of our mother and your friend Dell Jensen as living in the hearts of those she touched…for nothing loved is ever lost and she was loved so much.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. All are welcome. Memorial tributes may be made to charities of choice. In living memory of Dell Jensen, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  6. Declan Kavanagh

    To all the Jensen family,

We, Brigid (Shiel) Kavanagh, Delma’s sister, and all the Kavanagh family, send our sincere condolences to you on the sad passing of Delma. Our thoughts are with you all during this time and we just want you to know that we held Delma in very high regard. She was a beautiful and kind woman, and we have fond memories of her on her trips back home to Ireland down the years.

Before she left Bunnamuca, Strokestown, she was known as Delma, short for Fidelma. Both Eithne and Fidelma were named after saints Eithne and Fidelma, who were baptised by Saint Patrick at Ogulla Well, a couple of miles from Bunnamuca, at Tulsk, in the 5th century. They were daughters of King Laoghaire, a pagan king whom Patrick converted to Christianity.

Love and best wishes from Brigid and her children, Mary, Pádraic, Kevin, Declan, Seán, Aidan, and their families.

Although my brother Declan spoke on behalf of our Mother Bridget Shiel Kavanagh & the Kavanagh family I feel I & my family wish to offer our sincere condolences to Alan & all the Jensen girls
Your Mother was my favorite aunt of all & I will never forget the trip she made to Ireland when she stayed with us in Dublin
She was a wonderful happy outgoing & glamorous lady
I was a young boy at the time & she continuously embarrassed me by planting big red kisses on my cheek every time I passed her by
So much so that I ended up hiding atop of the apple tree in our back garden whilst Delma tried to coax me down by calling me her tweety pie
    May she Rest In Peace
