JASSAT, Alfred (Fred) Martin

August 8, 1952 – Kezi, Zimbabwe
April 9, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Fred Jassat beloved husband of Sophie Jassat (nee Williams) of Calgary, AB passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at the age of 66 years.

After emigrating from Zimbabwe, where he was an instructor with the National Railways, Fred continued his career in transportation working as a bus driver in Fort McMurray and Calgary. Despite battling with heart issues and Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) Fred continued to smile and joke showing grace in the face of adversity. Slow to anger, he always had a joke or funny story to share (many know his Durban Curry Story) with everyone and continued to joke and laugh until the day he died. Fred lived his life with a smile on his face and a joke for everyone. He was passionate about life, loved fishing, hunting, socialising and his travel adventures with his Sophie, but more than this Fred was passionate about his family and his legacy, his children and grandchildren. He touched everyone he met with his sense of humour, kindness, capacity to see and bring out the best in people and his ability to speak to any age group and make them feel welcome, safe and a part of his big family. For as much love as he gave, that love was returned by the many that crossed his path.

Fred is a survived by his loving wife Sophie; sons Avzil, Rayaz, Victor and Garth; daughters, Amanda, Pamela and Ashley; grandchildren, Keilon, Talia, Kayla, Harper and Jessika. Fred is also survived by his sisters, Anne, Desiree, Prudence, Bernie and their families; as well as the many “adopted” children, in-laws, nieces and nephews that his big heart could encompass.

Fred waits in heaven for his beloved Sophie, fishing and hunting with the loved ones that went before. Thank you Alfred for a life well lived and loved.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, April 18, 2019 from 12:30p.m to 2:00p.m.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home, where family and friends are welcome to join us in celebrating Fred’s life. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Alfred Jassat, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  6. I met Fred on social media several years ago and always noted his great sense of humour and compassion. He certainly had s passion for life and always had kind things to say, he was someone who built the confidence of those around him. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he shares the same birthplace as my father in Kezi, southeastern Zimbabwe- perhaps that explains why we had an affinity.

Fred ran his race, and now he has completed it.

God bless your soul Fred, and may Sophie and the immediate family be comforted during this season.

  18. Dear Sophie & family, please accept our deepest condolences on the passing of Freddie. I first met Freddie in 1986 when I first went to Zimbabwe. We will always recall the many enjoyable Saturday mornings at the Grey’s Inn with Freddie regaling us all with one of his many stories. I’m sure he worries about all these ‘honkies’ chasing his sisters. In time he realised our intentions were good… and we became lifelong friends.
Indeed Freddie and yourself Sophie came to visit us in Ireland on one of your many travels. As we say in Ireland …. ” In Iothlainn De go gCastar Sinn”.
Thinking of you all in these difficult times. Anne & Pat
