JARABEK, Mary Veronica (nee Sabo)

January 11, 1925 – Nyiradony, Hungary
December 28, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

On Monday, December 28th, 2015 our beloved Mary died gently and peacefully surrounded by her family. Mary immigrated to Canada in 1937 at the age of 12. She met the love of her life, John, in January of 1944 and they married 3 weeks later. John had immigrated a few years earlier and at the time of their marriage he was a member of the Calgary Highlanders Militia. Before he was due to be deployed to Europe, the war ended. In December of that year their only son James was born. During these early years, Mary much enjoyed her work at the Palliser Hotel where many lifelong friendships were formed. She and John enjoyed many travel and vacation times with friends to many parts of the USA, Mexico and Europe. In later years they would travel to their beloved Hawaii for extended winter stays. Mary’s life revolved around family and she essentially became nanny to her grandsons Jeffrey and Christopher in their preschool and early elementary years. This was also the period when Mary became very involved with the women’s group at St. Elizabeth Church. She served as President for many years hosting Spring and Fall Bazaars. This is where her true passion came to the fore – baking! She was widely appreciated for her contributions of Dobos Torte, Poppy Seed Rolls, and Honey Cake. The Sunday congregation particularly looked forward to her Pogacsa (Hungarian cheese biscuits) for the after service coffee social. Mary’s warm, kind and loving nature endeared her to everyone she met and she opened her home and heart to many. Mary had a very positive outlook on life, always saw the goodness in people, and was very generous with her time and loving spirit.

She will be greatly missed by her beloved son, Jim and daughters-in-law Pat Jarabek and Renata Jarabek, nephew Richard (Sharon), niece Vicky (Randy) and many close friends. She was loved dearly by her grandchildren Jeff Jarabek (Gwen), Chris Jarabek (Chelsey), Andrew Coldham (Sandy), Eliana Close (David) and Alissa Coldham and she delighted in her great-grandchildren Thomas, Catherine, Gaia and Benjamin. Mary was predeceased by her loving sister Betty in 2011. Mary lived independently until age 85 when she moved into Colonel Belcher Seniors Residence where she much enjoyed her stay. She resided and was lovingly cared for the last two years at the George Boyack Nursing Home. A private Funeral Service will be held. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Mary Jarabek, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
