April 21, 1928 – January 25, 2013

Dr Jan Jansonius, 84, of Calgary, passed away after a long illness at the Chinook Care Centre on January 25, 2013.

Jan is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Bettie, three children; Johannes, Paul (Diane), Corine (Eric) and three grandchildren; Brandon Johannes, Justin Jan and Ryan Paul. In February 1956 Jan, with his new bride, and a fresh Doctorate in Geology, left Holland and arrived in New York. On advice of job opportunity, they boarded a train to Alberta where Jan began his career with Imperial Oil, where he worked until retirement. Jan continued to pursue his passion in Palynology with volunteer work at Esso, and then the Geological Survey of Canada, where he continued to contribute until a sudden illness forced his move to a care facility in 2009. Jan’s many contributions to the industry include the writing, editing and proofing of many papers and texts on paleontology, including his definitive work, The Genera File of Fossil Spores and Pollen, a work he was able to digitize and make more accessible just prior to his illness. In addition to his love for geology, Jan was a very active cyclist, he and his wife putting tens of thousands of kilometers on their bikes throughout South and Central Alberta; sang in the CPO Chorus, and was an avid gardener.

At Jan’s request there will be no funeral service. Donations can be made in Jan’s name to the Parkinson Alberta Society, Many thanks to the nurses and staff in the Chinook Park wing of the Chinook Care Centre, whose welcoming and compassionate care was very much appreciated by Jan and the family. Condolence Messages

  1. Dr Wayne W Brideaux

I was very shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Jan. He was a towering member of the palynology community in Calgary and a leading figure worldwide in the science. But more than that he was a learned man leavened with kindness, integrity and humility. I knew him through palynology and through his many papers and publications. I offer my condolences to all members of his family.

  4. I worked with Jan many years ago when I first joined Imperial. We collaborated on data from a number of Canadian Frontier wells in the early 1980’s. He was a primary example of applying rigorous science to the exploration for oil and gas. Jan will be missed.

  5. Dear Jansonius family,

How you will miss your Jan! He was devoted to you – his wonderful family -, as well as to his exemplary research, the joy of singing and the mind’s unquenchable curiosity.
