JACKSON, Mona Isobel (nee Grindley)

November 19, 1938 – Edmonton, Alberta
May 27, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother, Mona Isobel Jackson (nee Grindley), on May 27 at the age of 79 after a long and unbelievably courageous battle with cancer.

Mona was born in Edmonton, AB on November 1938 to Frank and Isobel Grindley, where she lived until graduating from the University Of Alberta School Of Nursing in 1960. In 1961 she moved to Calgary where she was employed for several years by the Alberta Government as a public health nurse. In 1964 she married Bruce and stayed home to raise their three children.

Mona was an avid crafter and seamstress, taking pride in her many creations ranging from Christmas ornaments, sold at local craft fairs and stores, to pajamas and clothing lovingly sewn for her grandchildren. She enjoyed exploring the Calgary area with her hiking group and later became a keen gardener, spending many hours working in the garden. Mona was also a tireless volunteer for many organizations until her declining health prevented her from making further contributions.

Mona is survived by her three children, David (Frances), Wendy (Lyndon) and Douglas; and grandchildren Claire and Angus Jackson, and Nicole and Mitchell Majid. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Bruce Jackson and her younger brother John Grindley.

Mona was a kind, loving, patient and supportive wife, mother, and grandmother; she will be remembered and missed by all those who knew her.

Funeral Services will be held at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 – 8th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Southern Alberta Myeloma Patient Society, PO Box 8165 Station A Calgary, AB T2H 0H7, Telephone: (587) 998 – 7267, http://www.southernalbertamyeloma.ca/donate/.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic for their personal kindness and dedication. Their devoted support and care extended and enhanced her quality of life. It is the family’s hope that the suffering Mona endured will help contribute to a better quality of life for those affected by the disease in the future.

We would especially like to thank her many good friends who provided the necessary support, ensured she was able to get to appointments and kept her company during her illness. Their commitment to her wellbeing was exemplary and with this support Mona’s life was enriched.

In living memory of Mona Jackson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Offer Condolence for the family of JACKSON, Mona Isobel (nee Grindley)

    Dear Wendy, David, and Doug,
My deepest condolences on the passing of your Mom. She was a warm and lovely person and left a lasting impression on me. I had many many fond memories of spending childhood camping and skiing trips with our moms. And it was always a great day when my mom (Lois Duncan then Street) did Christmas baking with Mrs. Jackson. It was a seasonal highlight! I am thinking of you all during this difficult time. Sharon Duncan.

  3. Dave Street :

I have fond memories of visiting Mona and Bruce with my then wife Lois Street, who was a long time friend of Mona’s. I seem to recall both of them chatting about their earlier cooking binges, making jam and preserves. On behalf of her good friend and myself, I wish to pass on my sincere condolences to the family.

Mona, my classmate and Sept. 60 sister – I will never forget her infectious smile and quiet enthusiasm for all things Sept. 60. I recall sitting on a very very hot evening in Nakusp park listening to the Vancouver Youth Orchestra and this voice hollering “Colleen – what are you doing here?” Mona and I enjoyed the rest of the concert together. What a joy to have that memory to remember her by. She will be dearly missed by all of the classmates who are left. My sympathy goes out you her children and grandchildren.

Sorry for your loss Wendy. You certainly have your Mom’s warm eyes and lovely smile. It sounds like you also inherited your Mom’s passion for taking care of people’s health too. And we share the experience of growing up in Edmonton and going to the U of A. May you find solace in all the great memories you share with your family and the support of many friends, relatives and your appreciative patients. Mom and I are some of them. Take good care.
