September 28, 1944 – Liverpool, England
April 27, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Jean Hunte, beloved wife of Sterling Hunte, Mother of Stuart Hunte, mother-in-law of Susy Hunte, doting Grandmother of Kiara and Tahlia Hunte, a sister to nine siblings and friend to many, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at the age of 72.

Jean was an incredibly strong woman and was known to care more about others than herself, she fought until the very end and did not let go until she was certain that her family would be okay.

Jean was the ultimate mother, she cared immensely for Stuart. Right or wrong she stayed by his side, she used her vowed love to his innocence to praise or guide him in the right direction. Jean was compassionate about every aspect of Stuart’s life, especially her grandchildren. She played a major role in their lives, she was a gentle, patient teacher who would drop everything she was doing to give her girls attention. She read Old English nursery rhymes before tucking them into bed at sleepovers and chased them around the house just to hear them laugh. She was a great friend to her daughter-in-law and treated her like the “daughter she never had” sharing and exchanging life experiences over countless cups of tea including many stories of memories of her parents and nine siblings whom she grew up with.

One of her most beloved memories took place on August 16, 1968, her journey as a wife alongside a loving husband Sterling Hunte began on this day, Jean was born and met Sterling in Liverpool, England. Jean was Sterling’s number one fan, she supported every business decision, life decision and music adventure they had together and loved Sterling unconditionally. As described by her husband, there was something about Jean that people sensed he calls the “attraction factor” and without vocalizing her life gifts, they always seemed to melt into peoples’ hearts. Her immense care and consideration had no limits, she and Sterling travelled overseas to build homes for the less fortunate in Belize, and as he recalls seeing her mixing concrete wearing her wide brimmed hat and a happy grin as the concrete covered her feet, nothing stopped her from pushing to do what was right for others and that is what she lived for. Even at her lowest points she was concerned about the well-being of friends and family near and far. Jean will be truly and deeply missed, she was once, twice, three times a lady. May she rest in Gods arms as she lives through each person she has touched here on earth.

A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at St. Luke’s Anglican Church (2951 – 26th Avenue S.E.) on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Jean Hunte, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: 403-241-0044.

  5. We still remember and often talk about the wonderful block parties we used to have on Woodbrook Road… the bike decoration contest, the three legged races and dancing to the steel band. Those were happy days! Jean’s body may be gone, but her spiritual energy and joy of life still remain. Our hearts and thoughts reach out to you, Sterling and Stuart.

Sterling, I am so happy I knew Jean. She was all that a Christian woman should be. Her quiet love for people and her sincere nature always made me want to be around her. Her sense of humor always made me laugh. I will miss her but at the same time I know that on that day God called her name and took her home, as she passed through this world to the next, you could hear Jesus say to her “Well done, my good and faithful servant, well done. And welcome home”. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

  7. To Sterling and Stuart our condolences on the loss of your wife and mother. As your old neighbours in Woodbine, we still have fond memories of the time you lived on our block. Jean with her lovely smile and her English accent, which sounded so sophisticated to us. The relaxed way in which the steel band would practice in the garage and the kids would play in the forest. It was a good place for families to raise kids. I have had some tea with Jean and she was a nice warm woman with a good sense of humour and we sure enjoyed having her as a neighbour. Years later I saw her again when Kendal was performing at Ironwood and we did some catching up as old friends do. We are hoping that the happy memories of Jean will help you in the time ahead.
