HUNLEY, Carrie Dee

April 14, 1967 – Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta
June 10, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

With much love and pride, we celebrate the amazing and inspiring life of Carrie Dee Hunley.

Carrie was born in Fort Saskatchewan, AB, on April 14, 1967 to Richard and Freda Handford. Carrie was their second child with an older sister, Holly. Growing up in Fox Creek, Carrie enjoyed a small town childhood of freedom, simple pleasures, sports and the start of lifelong friendships. She attended school and graduated in Fox Creek in 1985. Her first adventure of her adult life started when she moved to Spokane, WA to complete her dental assistant training. There were many more adventures to follow.

Carrie moved back to be closer to family in Whitecourt, AB,  to commence work in her field. As fate would have it, it was in this career that she met the love of her life. A handsome fella named Tony found that he needed to have his teeth cleaned much more often than insurance covered. It was the beginning of a love story that lasted the rest of her days.

Carrie found her true calling; as a mom, on February 13, 1992 when Kalyn Marie was born. Kalyn was thrilled to celebrate the day her mom, married her dad on September 18, 1993. Carrie savoured Kalyn’s childhood for the next seven years. She joyfully extended her mom role with the birth of Rijel Dylan on May 17, 1999. The next twelve years were busy for Carrie. Chasing dance, volleyball, T-Ball, swimming and school activities with the kids, reveling in every moment and of course, befriending so many. Over the years of raising their family, Carrie also took on the role of adding balance for the family, she planned many family vacations to warm destinations, BC and the family farms.

In 2011, the entire family took the adventure of a lifetime and moved to Australia. Here, they escaped the everyday pressures of life and enjoyed each other in the wonder of a different country and many different activities.

Returning to Canada, life took them to DeWinton, where Carrie enthusiastically entered the next phase of life; STS mom. In this environment, Carrie continued to make special friends. As Kalyn was becoming an adult and Rijel needed less attention, Carrie could now focus on her other passion; health and fitness. Her personal discipline was evident in the training schedule that she maintained and the courses she completed in fitness instruction. She enjoyed her time at the gym, leading boot camps and sharing her passion for fitness with others. In keeping with Carrie’s passion for travel, fitness and adventure; Carrie and Tony traveled with old friends to climb Kilimanjaro and safari in Africa last October. It was the culmination of many exotic trips with family and friends to Europe, Asia, Australia, and the USA.

Having lived a beautiful life, Carrie passed away peacefully on Monday, June 10, on a gorgeous sunny morning surrounded by her loving family. Carrie’s life has been an inspiration to us all. Her competitive spirit, kind and caring heart, combined with the ability to chat with anyone about things that matter. She touched everyone that she met.

Carrie leaves behind her husband Tony; daughter Kalyn; son Rijel; father Richard; sister Holly (Kelly); nieces, Carmen (Kevin) and Amanda (Brad); great-nephews, Callen and Parker; mother-in-law Donna; sisters, brothers and nieces and nephews, Tammy, Wayne and their son Ranger; Tracy, Wes and their children, Taite and Tanner; Tabatha, Steve and their children, Tristan, Teagan and Taryn; Tonya, Mark and their children, Sam and Nolan; Teanna and Taro and their children, Maiya, Taisei and Vaila; along with numerous extended family and friends.

We celebrate the memories and things that Carrie left us to think about and invite you to join us in the celebration on Saturday June 15, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at the First Alliance Church (12345 – 40th Street S.E., Calgary, AB). Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation specifically Mary Johnson Melanoma Professorship, Provincial Office, Sun Life Place, 710, 10123 – 99th Street, Edmonton, AB T5J 3H1 Telephone: 1(866) 412-4222. https://www.albertacancer.ca/donate

  2. Carrie and I enjoyed many laughs, some tears and hard workouts – usually followed by coffee. She was a woman who was beautiful inside and out. I will miss her kind eyes, her lovely smile as well as her gentle spirit. She was loyal to a fault and everyone who had the privilege of crossing paths with her is a better person because of it. I am deeply sorry for your loss and hope that each of you find some comfort and support through the many that are thinking about you.

Carrie and I met when her and Tony were teaching Kaylyn to ride a two wheeler bike on Baly Road, in Whitecourt, when Kaylyn was 4 years old. That was the beginning of a life long friendship. Sharing many special memories including the birth of our second children, raising children, running her first half marathon together, memorable vacations, Carrie supporting and standing by my side as my late husband and her dear friend Ed battled cancer and passed away and most importantly our faith. Carrie made time for everyone and did so genuinely. A living example of positivity and loyalty. A beautiful person inside and out and I am blessed beyond measure for knowing her. I will cherish your friendship forever Carrie! Until we meet again my friend♥️

  24. Although it has been many years since we crossed paths due to life twists and turns I will never forget the fun times our families had together, the gut wrenching workouts, and the time you and Tony left me with your drunken bird Mac. Lol.
When I heard that you were ill and reached out it was so nice to know that you still looked and considered me an old friend.
So from one Ol Friend to another, “See ya on the flip side”!
    Rest In Peace
