HUMPHRIES, Shirley Ruth

September 13, 1933 – Calgary, Alberta
December 16, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta

Shirley Ruth Humphries, 83, of Calgary, went peacefully to her heavenly home on December 16, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with Dementia. Her recent confusion and resulting anxiety are over. She fully recognizes her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. This will be her best Christmas yet.

Shirley was born to the late Frank and Dorothy Wallis in Calgary on September 13, 1933. She was immersed in both the Brethren and later the Christian and Missionary Alliance communities in Calgary, which would be her lifelong support.

Shirley was blessed with a large and loving family. She married Ken Humphries on July 31, 1954, in Calgary and together they raised six children with love, patience and Christ-centered godliness.

Shirley was a generous and fun-loving wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, daughter, sister and friend. She had an immense love for babies and all things crafty, especially knitting, sewing and quilting. She enjoyed collecting dolls and was a member of the Calgary Doll Society for many years.

Shirley is survived and was largely surrounded in her passing by her husband, Ken, their six children and spouses, Terry and Terri-Lynn, Brenda, Lynne and Don Kowalenko, Judy and Darrell Young, Mike and Robin and Dan and Sue; her eighteen grandchildren: Jenny, T.J., Josh, Joel (Jenna) and Jeff Humphries, Jeff (Jenn), Julie and Jodi Wright, Alison, Jaimie and Megan Kowalenko, Jillian (Rob Reimer), Amy (Geoff Buchan), Kayla (Darren Overmars), and Kendra Young, Lindsay, Jack and Charlie Humphries; and four great grandchildren Maxx and Samantha Wright, Cadence and Rome Humphries.

Shirley was preceded in death by her sister Joyce Basham of White Rock, BC, and their parents.

A Memorial service will be held at First Alliance Church (12345 40 St SE, Calgary, Alberta) on Thursday, December 22, 2016, at 1:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made in Shirley’s name to Camp Chamisall (7620 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2V 1K2;

In living memory of Shirley Humphries, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th STREET S.E.. Telephone: 403-203-0525.

    So sorry to hear of Mrs. Humphries passing. The world is a lesser place as a result, but I take heart in knowing she is home with her Savior.

    Growing up in Calgary, I spent a lot of time with Mike (and friends) at the Humphries’ home and I remember how welcoming Mrs. Humphries always was in allowing an unruly bunch of teens to regularly invade her beautiful home. I am forever grateful those “growing up” years and the positive impact the Humphries had on my life, even to this day.

    My condolences to the Humphries family in your loss but I join in rejoicing she will be in heaven this Christmas to see her savior. I was flower girl for Shirley and Ken’s wedding and vividly remember that day. She was always a special kind hearted lady . I pray the God of all comfort will be yours at this difficult time.

  10. Dear Lynn and Don,
    We are so sorry for your loss. Please accept our sincere sympathy. We just held the visitation and funeral for Glenn’s mom this past weekend so we can relate to your journey. I remember your mother being an elegant and gracious lady. She will surely be missed. The verses we used in Katie’s memory card were taken from Romans 8:24-25 “For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult and sad time. Glenn and Corinne Shuh

    We send you our love and prayers in this time of loss of your dear mother. No one can replace a mother but we are glad that she is with Jesus. Shirley made many beautiful nighties for newborns in our MALI maternities. Most mothers do not have any baby clothes when they deliver their babies. Shirley made sure that some at least some did. She will be remembered for her generosity among many other virtues.
