HUGO, Stephanie (nee Ondrik)

December 26, 1936 – Coleman, Alberta
May 19, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Stephanie Hugo of Calgary passed away peacefully at her home Saturday, May 19, 2018 at the age of 81 years.

Stephanie was born to Slovak immigrant parents, their fourth child and the first to be born in Canada. She was a coal miner’s daughter, spending her early years in the mountains and valleys of the Crowsnest Pass before moving to Lethbridge and then to Calgary. In 1956, she married Peter Hugo, with whom she raised five children. For over 35 years, she worked alongside her late husband Peter in the piano business in Calgary.

Stephanie loved hosting gatherings and socializing with family and friends. She enjoyed gardening and had already planted her vegetable garden this spring. Her culinary skills were particularly appreciated by her family, especially her Christmas baking. She was a long-time parishioner and volunteer at Sacred Heart Church, heading up the Reception Committee for many years.

Stephanie is survived by her children, Sharon Hugo and Richard Woodward of Manhattan Beach, CA, Ken Hugo and Brenda Austin of Calgary, Alan Hugo and Lori Kingshott of Danville, CA, Lisa Hugo and Mo Sachedina of Calgary; grandchildren, Sabina and Vanessa Woodward, Kyle and Reid Hugo, Jacqueline, Kristin, Samantha and Peter Hugo, and Maya, Norah and Rosemary Sachedina; siblings, Stan Ondrik and Margaret Hugo and sister-in-laws, Helen Kubasek and Ilene Duska.

Stephanie was predeceased by her husband, Peter in 1994; her son, Daniel in 1988; siblings John Ondrik, Joe Ondrik and Verona Wiencki, as well as her beloved dachshund, Pokey, who she lost this March.

Stephanie lived her life seeing the best in others, listening to their problems and giving—giving to her family, giving to her friends and relatives, giving to the church, giving to those in need. She had a very special quiet kindness about her. Everyone who knew Stephanie is better for it.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1307 – 14th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 8:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1307 – 14th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, May 24, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow at the church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Stephanie Hugo, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Our condolences to you all. Your Mom who I met through Brenda, was a vibrant soul. I will most fondly remember her on Stampede parade mornings as she prepared and watched with her grandchildren and was excited as they. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  6. Brian Mullen :

To the Hugo family: My deepest sympathies on the passing of your dear mother. I have fond memories of her growing up. She was always kind, welcoming and had a certain calmness about her. Though Danny and I did manage to test her patience from time to time! She was a wonderful mother and I hope you take some comfort in the many fond memories you must have of her.

  7. Joey, Jenny, Herby and Brhyanne :

How do we say goodbye to a friend who treat you like family? Or to a person that has a very kind heart that makes you feel you belong? Mrs. Stephanie Hugo is all that to me. I met her through her daughter Sharon and since then I have been welcomed and received as one of their own. Every time I visit her, she tells me stories of aunts or cousins or uncles from the past as if they are mine too. When my granddaughter comes trick or treating on Halloween, Mrs. Hugo as we like to call her, always has something special ready for her. On dinners that she hosted, there were no awkward moments because Mrs. Hugo, in her own way, seems to be like the “life of the party”. I am very thankful and blessed to have known her.

And now back to my question: how do we say goodbye? I think the answer is we don’t really say goodbye to special people like Mrs. Hugo… because she will always be in our memories and in our hearts… so for you Mrs. Hugo it’s
“Hasta la vista” and till we meet again….

  14. Helen Keller said, “the best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart.” Stephanie from the moment I first met you, you touched my heart. I came to know you as a second mom, and really loved the way you would help me see the good in everything and everyone. You will be missed my dear friend. Thank you for always having time for me, for sharing your insights and mostly your friendship. Until we meet again ….
