Margaret was born October 3, 1925 to Ernest and Margaret (nee Nelson) Mitchell. She grew up on the grounds of the Caprington Estate, in Scotland, where her father was employed as the Chauffeur. Their first child, Allan, was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, 1948. They immigrated to Calgary, Canada in 1949 and their daughter, Heather, was born 1953.

Margaret had a passion for animals and always had dogs when living in their SW home. She volunteered at the Calgary General Hospital as a member of the Women’s Auxiliary for eight years. Together Margaret and Larry enjoyed square dancing, Scottish country dancing and Lawn Bowling, at the Calgary Lawn Bowling Club. To Margaret’s family,
I am sorrowed to hear of the death of Margaret on June 21, 2019. I met Margaret through a friend who, along with her family, were long-time members of the Calgary Lawn Bowling Club. Margaret made learning how to bowl fun, and taught me to laugh at my mistakes, and to learn from them. That first day, after giving me some pointers on holding and delivering the bowl, she realized that not only was I using a bowl too large for my hand, but I also was holding the bowl in my left hand. Without hesitation she called on another member, whom she knew was left-handed. “I can’t help you with that,” she explained, “but David’s like you. I can’t wait to see how the other members react when they realize that you’re the same as David.” Due to working at Foothills Hospital on weekends and occasionally holidays, I was not always able to participate in the jitneys. On such occasions I came after my shift ended, and enjoyed watching the play. I usually brought my sketch pad along. One of my most cherished drawings is the one I did of Margaret (from behind her). When I think of Margaret, the first thing that I remember is her smile, warm and welcoming.

I will not be able to attend Margaret’s memorial service on June 30, 2019 in Calgary, as I currently am in Missoula, Montana helping my mother, who is now 97. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

May the Lord bless you and comfort you.
