HUBBARD, Leila Olga

June 5, 1926 – Corentyne, British Guiana
January 25, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved on Friday, January 25 2019, at Seton Age Care Centre.

Born in British Guiana to Cecilia & Herbert Williams, she was one of eight children, Verna, Eric, Gerald, Roy, Dockie, Bobby and Mervyn, who all predeceased her.

Leila married David/Frank Hubbard in 1951 and they immigrated to Canada in 1968. They lived in Ottawa for five years and opened “Mother Hubbard’s Variety Shoppe”. They moved to Stratford for seven years, and then Alberta bound in 1980. She worked at CMHC, in Calgary, for five years. She never had any children, but was blessed and loved by the numerous nieces and nephews spread across the world.

Her only nephew in Alberta, Joseph Glyn-Williams (Sonja), their two children Steven (Vanessa), Jessica Tov (David), became their adopted children who took on the role of caring and supporting them throughout the years. Her nieces, Mary Allison King of Burlington On, June Allison of Cardson, AB, nephews Jolyon King of Florida and William Henry King of BC, were committed to her by their many visits over the years, to celebrate milestones and assist during illnesses.
Leila had sincere and lasting friendships, which she cherished in her lifetime. She also shared a great and full life with David until his passing in January 2018.

Please join us to say farewell to Leila at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, February 1, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

The family would like to thank her doctors, nurses and staff at Seton for the care and compassion extended to her.

In living memory of Leila Hubbard, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  4. Sonja/Joseph Glyn-Williams

A tribute to Aunt Leila and our condolences to all family members from Sonja & Joseph Glyn-Williams.
Aunt Leila lived her life to the fullest with the love of her life Uncle David. They had no children, so Joseph became their son when they moved here in 1980. If you saw Aunt Leila, Uncle David would not be far behind. She enjoyed gardening along with Uncle David and loved being surrounded by flowers.
Pink was her favourite colour. She was very organized, meticulous, religious, precise, a good homemaker, adventurous (took cross country skiing lessons), loved the outdoors, had a great memory, who kept all greeting cards and pictures from friends and family and could tell you the years each occasion took place. She displayed most of the pictures that were sent to them. She enjoyed hosting family and friends and spoke highly of them. She cherished the friendships she and Uncle David made over the years and kept them close to her heart. She was never in a hurry, everything was planned and executed well in advance and you could not change her mind, once a decision was made, that is how it had to be. Because of Uncle David’s lack of hearing, she was the one who repeated to him in a calm way, the message being sent. She was a lady and was treated like a queen by Uncle David, so we, of course, had no choice but to follow. She enjoyed cooking and made one of the best curries I have ever tasted. They enjoyed barbecues, many trips to Banff, travelling abroad, spending time with friends and family. She enjoyed the finer things in life and was ever so spoiled by Uncle David. She took a course in painting and was very proud of her work and framed a few of them. She was a very attractive woman and loved getting compliments. As of three weeks ago, a new gentleman at her care home came up to her and told her how beautiful she was, well, Aunt Leila loved that and gently smiled at him and said: “thank you”.
She was content in her life, and would always tell me, everything in moderation, she never extended herself or changed plans halfway through, it had to be planned and that is the course she followed.
She considered Joseph and me her children, and we treated them like our parents and over the years we learned many life lessons from them.
We will miss you Aunt Leila, rest in peace with your loved one. Your adopted children Joseph and Sonja
